New tool thread

There has been a lot of discussion about ratcheting screwdrivers over the years - both on her and on GJ. I have yet to own one, and have never felt the need to have one. What am I missing out on?
I've had a few and just never seen the appeal. I'm just so used to a screwdriver being "fixed" that I I've always felt I spend more time getting it to go the direction I want than I would to just grab it and use it as a normal screwdriver.

And then I just wind up putting them in the locked position and using them as a fixed screwdriver.

If a screw is really tight the impact driver comes out.

I understand why some people like them, but they're just not my style.

Nothing!

I have one and use it in locked position. Thought it would be handy, but it doesn’t solve any problems for me.

This is my first ratcheting screwdriver. I think the main benefit is speed. This Klein also includes a ECX "combination bit", in two sizes, for screws used on electrical devices. I didn't even know of ECX bits until a few weeks ago.

When they started doing that odd combination screw I went to using a #2 Robertson. I use the ECX bit a lot now but using the Robertson is quicker to engage and doesn't strip like the ECX. ECX works well for something that has been messed up by a Phillips. Some brands of electrical equipment use the combo screws that are not compatable with ECX so it is handier to just use Robertson.

Yes, I could have waited until the Capri’s came back in stock. But I scored these for over 40% off msrp, new, so they were somewhat justifiable.

Found a Craftsman USA 1/4" drive 8mm socket and short locking extension on the road today while walking the dogs. They have some road rash but I can't complain about the price! :)

I have a set of those 1/4" drive locking extensions. I've been using them for a few decades now. I still don't know if I like them or not, having to unlock them when fitting a socket onto them.

Do all of the locking extensions have to be unlocked to fit the socket, or is this feature exclusive to Craftsman? I have never used locking extensions.

Some new tools today from Auto Zone and Advance Auto. I’ve heard excellent things about Duralast ratchets and since I needed a long 3/8 flex head for the house I wanted to give them a try as I have to do brakes this weekend. I wanted a Diehard but none of the Advance Auto near where I work or at home have them so I decided to get this one. They are expensive though. Also got an 8mm 1/4 drive to replace one I lost under the hood of my brother in laws Mercury. Then got some angled needle nose pliers at Advance Auto too just for the house to have. I’ve always had a thing for auto parts store tools. The tool isle was full of people buying stuff first time I’ve ever seen the auto parts store busy lol. I had to go anyway to get new bolts for the water pump pulley so I knew I wasn’t leaving without tools lol.

The snap on ratcheting screwdriver with bit storage is all I use. So smooth and makes removing and installing screws much easier.

I like the shop air fitting. A quick shot from the hose vs, pumping by hand.

My oil extractor has a similar fitting to create vacuum (a venturi fitting) so, use shop air to create the vacuum, and extract away…
Would be nice to have both…

it’s rare that I bleed brakes near my air compressor… but when Indo, and the compressor is operating and charged, then it is convenient…

A new to me tool lol. Straight from my favorite place to shop. eBay. I am replacing the brake pads and rotors on my Escape today or tomorrow and I wanted a 6 point 18mm 1/2 socket to break the caliper bracket bolts loose. I only have 12 points at home for 1/2 stuff mostly. I couldn’t find a 6 point at home, the pawn shop, the auto parts store or anywhere besides the tool truck and Northern Tool but the one at Northern Tool didn’t look very well made and seemed thin like it would crack so I decided to get this one from eBay. I found one in a set at Walmart but I’d rather have this one single socket than buy a whole set of them not knowing quality. One of my favorite brand of tools Craftsman USA 🇺🇸. Hard to believe I don’t have some socket’s already as I own over 2,000 no joke lol 😂. I guess no one really cares if they have 12 point or 6 point but I’ve always had better luck with 6 point at least on smaller stuff. Hard to tell from the pictures but it doesn’t look like it’s ever been used just sat in someone’s box. The inside looks new. Very happy with my purchase. Wish Craftsman USA was still available I’d own all of it lol.
