New Honda Ridgeline...sort of

I've also heard that it may lose the flip-up rear seat, but I don't know that for sure. If that is indeed true, then that's another step backwards for it in my opinion.

I honestly think the Honda is a bit sedate looking...but I don't see it as a ten year old design. It's front end especially has originality to it while still not being out of place with current designs. It looks modern and rather....simple in it's lines. It's growing on me.

The GMC you show is a very unattractive truck in my opinion. The rear wheel hump/flare is obnoxious looking to me. The curve and back-side window tie-in just doesn't flow either. But that means nothing as it's just my taste and not a fact or anything.

We don't know the stats yet on the new Ridge. I'm sure it will be competitive. They have known all along they needed to improve MPG's and some of the load/towing capacities of the older model. Mine has plenty of capacity for me and the mpg's are ok given it's shape and that it's a pickup after all.

Many folks will never even give a Ridgeline a chance anyway being that for some reason, they either feel threatened by it....or they can't stand the idea of a unibody design for a pickup. Personally...I don't care about the hows or whys of any vehicle...or if it's made in japan or the U.S. What I care about is if it's reliable and does what I need it to do without worries. My current Ridge has excelled at that.

Yup, everyone has different tastes. Capability wise it will probably be on par with the mid-size segment, no biggie. Unibody? No biggie. Sure people bad mouth it but it does just fine. I just think they are coming out with a new redesign but it doesn't seem anything special. Maybe Honda fans will eat it up but this is a very competitive landscape and I just don't think it will be a big hit.

And I do like the black one.

Looks like the seats still flip up?

Marysville, Dandiesville, Pansiesville, and Milquetoastapopilos from the looks of it.

They're going to vaginize that truck out of existence.

Dodge built enough unibody full size vans that it shouldn't be a concern anymore. Least of my concerns.

Pssssssht. Not a very exciting looking vehicle IMO. Of course it will be defended, Hondas have usually been above average cars. Thus a loyal following.

I would say the interior will be its nicest feature, probably clean and well executed. The best vehicle available? Nah, just depends on what you're looking for.

Honda is the last place any real pickup buyer looks for a truck...

I'm glad to see that they're keeping the fold-up rear seats.

And, yet, they just can't seem to stay out of Ridgeline threads when they come up...

Trucks are trucks to me and do nothing for me in terms of looks and find so little excitement in them. I think of them more like a wheel barrow. It carries stuff around. If I wanted a smaller one I'd try it.

It would probably work quite well for your RAM's practical duties though? No heavy towing or hauling, no off roading? I'm sure over half of pickup owners could do everything they currently do with a Ridgeline, but want a full size anyways.
Up here, probably an AWD ridgeline will cost more than a mid range 4wd hemi quadcab Ram, but some people like the size of a ridgeline or won't buy a "domestic" in any case.

They sure do....time and time again.

It used to be worse, when many "real" pickup types would come into a Ridgeline thread just to be rude. It's calmed down a bit...at least on BITOG.

It's real and it's a truck. It's just not a heavy duty truck nor even a full size truck....which it doesn't claim to be.

If a person pulls 10,000 pound trailers, works as a construction foreman, owns a ranch or landscape firm...then no, the Ridgeline is not for you. But as we all know but rarely admit, is that the vast majority of average Americans that own big, capable trucks....almost never use those trucks up to those capabilities. Some do, just not many. Most are poser trucks...not a scratch on them, no dents in the bed....never hauling more than a medium sized boat or similar travel trailer. That's just how it is.

Honda built a truck based on that reality. It is able to perform all the duties most people need a truck for, yet do it in a PERHAPS more refined way...with the comforts and road manners of an SUV. Has it been a big success? No. Will this new one be any more successful? Maybe so...maybe no. It certainly LOOKS more like a regular type pickup...and that may attract more buyers.

Somebody a few posts back (of which I currently ignore now because his goal is to be obnoxious) thought that because I own a Honda Ridgeline, I would defend it. Like just because I own something, I can't give an honest opinion. Well, that isn't true. I like Honda vehicles for the most part, but I am not above being critical of them. I'd posted a fairly negative review of my Honda Fit...after owning it for a year now. I wish I'd have purchased something else. But my Ridgeline? It's honestly been a fantastic vehicle...a real "truck" in every sense of the word for my purposes...without the negative aspects most full size trucks present. Is it perfect? No. But it suits my needs far better than any other "real" truck I've ever owned.

I hope the new one is even better...but I'll stick with mine until it falls apart (probably 250k or more miles).

The Ridgeline is truck as much as a unibody is now an SUV. Durango and Explorers come to mind.
Diehards will argue either way, claiming a box frame needs to be used for an SUV or a Truck. The auto engineers don't always agree with the public.

The Ridgeline is 90% truck for 90% of the market. Very few need more than that. That's what Honda set out to originally accomplish. Enough truck, not too much.

I'd still like something that gets 30mpg with the same amount of utility/size of the original. Maybe someday that will happen and I'll replace my Vue.

I am curious what the new numbers for this thing is going to be. If Honda doesn't make a serious improvement in mpg's...they will have made a mistake. Even though gas is low right now, one thing that is undeniable about the first generation was mileage. It was a big complaint. If it can tow the same or better...I don't think that will matter. Horsepower will. I still think they need to make a performance version with a supercharger or something. But we all know Honda is not generally inclined to do things like that.

I'm sure it'll share engines with the Pilot, and get numbers very close to a FWD/AWD Pilot. I think it's inevitable that this generation Ridgeline will get the VCM engine, which the previous generation never had. Though my folks have nearly 50,000 miles on their 2014 3.5L direct injected VCM engine, I just can't quite warm up to it yet (the direct injection and VCM).

I have no reservations on the 6-speed automatic nor the likely available iVTM-4 system which, as I understand, is an SH-AWD system with a different name. The 2014 MDX chassis (on which the new Pilot rides, and likely this new Ridgeline as well) is tremendously playful, and I presume the new Ridgeline will be just as nimble, or more, as the old generation, which is a huge reason I prefer it over a "real truck".

I've got a direct injection engine on my Fit....and it is an area of concern to me if I keep that car for a long time.
We'll see. I'm highly satisfied with the current power plant in my Ridge though. It should last a very long time.

Indeed it may work acceptably in my wife's home health practice, but it would be stuffed to the gills. You may not realize what she carries with her every day for her patients. Anything from a walker or wheelchair up to fancy specialized equipment, plus a ton of medical supplies, etc. Who wants to run around packed up tight all the time? Not us.

The incredible practicality of Ramboxes would likely not be available either.

The final factor is the ride quality. At the end of a 200 mile day the vehicle's comfort is paramount, and she makes the big bucks so she gets what she wants. Her rig rides like a pure luxury car, absolutely wonderful quality of NVH.

Finally she gets almost 18 mpg with big performance when she wants it. Quite comparable to a Ridgeline in the real world. I can easily get 20 with a lighter foot.

Sorry, we shopped hard for over a year to settle on that RAM. It's a real sweetie. 22k miles and still getting to know it...

I'm glad the RAM is working for you, but it seems on paper the Ridgeline should be right there, minus the ramboxes for cargo space, if you have the crew cab.
It would be interesting to drive them back to back anyways, I always notice the solid rear axle in any truck, not that its terribly annoying, but on broken pavement or washboard its not ideal.
Typically Honda chooses a firmer more direct feel for their cars, but I doubt the Ridgeline would be much more tiring to drive, and in theory the independent rear suspension could be tuned for better tracking and resistance to wind gusts than a solid rear axle.
Anyways, someone like your wife in a tighter urban area might choose a Ridgeline as its ~2' shorter, but gives up a 1' in the bed to a quad cab ram, or only 3" to a crew cab ram short box.

I still don't understand what advantage the new Ridgeline will have over the existing offers of the mid-size segment??
