Here are a few I got today. Of course the usual Fram junk. The Hastings was a surprise because I know this filter was only used 5000 miles and it was severely damaged.

The few pics do not do the clicker type filters justice. They are much worse in person. I will finish loading the other pics of clicker bypass filters that I tore apart today ASAP. 9 OUT OF 11 CLICKER TYPE FILTERS I EXAMINED TODAY WERE DAMAGED IN SOME WAY. All non clicker Champions had no problems. These valves do not open and they all suffered the same demise. The paper is smashed down to the core because of the extremely uneven pleat spacing causing tears at the endcaps and all the way across the media from cap to cap.

BTW I think I have the first failed E-core I have seen. One pleat of the filter on the closed end did not set in the resin on the endcap and was loose when I pulled it from the can.

Lubeowner,

Have you ever seen a Purolator with a torn filter media or with defects ??? I love your input since you own a shop.

Have not seen any problems with the Purolator. I know the string around the media issue is concern for some and I have seen a few that seemed to be pulled a little too tight but it has not caused the paper to saw through. The Motorcraft filters built by purolator seem to be the best built filters we are seeing right now, expecially the ones with the silicone ADBV. The top of the line Wix/Napa gold are also very well built. Napa silver: a lot better than Fram but not comparable to the Gold line.

Today so far:
Champion: PH253, took 3 apart all were damaged at the media seam area. PH8A- Pleat next to media seam pulled away from both endcaps.

Fram/Mileguard: Took apart 3, ane Ford app. the other two Toyota. All had extremely deformed paper, 4-5 holes punched through the media into the center tube, and media torn away from the endcaps

Again, all the filters we are checking off of GM vehicles with the bypass built in to the filter head have had almost no issues. I would say that 90% of the clicker type filters we have dismantled have had major issues.

lubeowner.

When you take the filter off and post pics in here, would you also add in the make and model of the vehicle, the model year, and the total vehicle mileage along with the miles since last oil change, and type of oil used previous to your changing the oil.

That way the information would be beneficial to get an understanding of the conditions the filter has seen during it's use.

It would also be nice to find out from the owner how often they have changed their air filter, if there have been any vacuum leaks, and how often if at all they have changed their coolant.

Putting those in a public forum where you didnt have to sign up to access them would help if you could do that.

Or is there a way to see them all without registering?

Dan

Dan,

It would be helpful if someone could explain to me the best way to post pics. I am new at this and pretty lost. I want to post pics that show up without having to register or go to a host site to view them. Any help much appreciated.

Does this happen on start up when there is a 'spike' in oil pressure ???

I think it is both. These are filters that went through the winter with many cold startups. The damage I have observed is always where the media is unevenly spaced with large gaps between the pleats.

These are some pretty crudded up filters here
