So a friend from work sent out a blanket e-mail to everybody about his wife's brother (or some form of similar relation) opening a new butcher shop in town. He's from Toronto and ran the same style of business up there.

GOOD GOD

The meat.... It is incredible. There is no other word. Cooked my first sirloin steak from there on the BBQ last week with nothing more than a light Dianna sauce marinade and it melted in my mouth, it was literally the best steak I've ever had.

All the meat is locally sourced in Ontario.

Cooked up a set of Oktoberfest sausages from there tonight and again, the best sausages I've ever had.

Prices aren't bad, but he has some expensive meats in there, stuff that is $20+/lb.

Rand: When you are up here again, I'm going to get us some of his steak so that you can experience this.

It's the little places that have the best food. The wife and I have taken to going to the public market on Saturday mornings to get our produce and other grocery items. We got some hot Italian sausage from a local packing house's stand, and that stuff was far better than the sausage on sale at the local grocery stores.

I worked at a small family-owned butcher and deli for a few years in my early college years. It was owned by a great Italian family. I was well fed.

Where's this market?

Meat ships well. I've ordered meat from Omaha Steaks before. They send it in a styrofoam cooler packed in dry ice.

One of our local premium butchers ships to the middle east..
We are lucky as in this area, we've got a franchise which buys premium local beef, and a new free range butcher that sells grass fed wagyu (only was I can afford to look at it), and other free range local meat
Was in there recently and a farmer was negotiating the sale of a number of sheep...direct to the butcher who slaughters it locally.

For many years we've used a local locker (similar to a butcher) for the majority of our meats. LargeCarManX2 is correct, the locker only has the ability to pick the finest animals-in our case from local farmers, and therein lies the secret of their quality.

I can't speak for your butcher, but our locker, when purchased in bulk, is substantially less expensive than the shrink wrapped cuts that get sold in the mega retailers. The quality of the meats from our locker is second to none.

I cant say that the ones sold in locker setups around here are cheaper than the supermarket. The average price for all cuts comes to around $7/lb around here. But it is organic, grass fed beef.

The free range place is about the same price as the local name brand supermarkets, however his mince (ground beef) is actually minced, rather than extruded, and he doesn't use carbon monoxide like the supers do to make it stay pink/red.

Lamb loin chops about $24/Kg, which is $4 less than the supermarkets, and he does a whole rump (which he then slices for you) for around $19/Kg

For many years we have simply put together 3 families and purchased a cow from a local guy who raises them on 1000+ acres of untouched pasture. No artificial anything, and completely free range.

Surprisingly cheap and once you get this kind of meat you will be unlikely to eat store bought again.

If my memory serves me, the last time we bought half a cow (late last fall) we paid just under $4.00 per pound for the combined beef and processing from locker. That's no ground beef; cuts only. The cattle are raised by a farmer with a small herd about 2 miles from our house.

I bought a 1/4 a few weeks ago and it came out to 2.98/lb. Not bad for a 117lbs of meat. Bought it from a coworker who a small farm.

Get halal goat meat from your local Pakistani grocer and have your sub-continent friend make goat curry for you. Usually costs about $7/lb but totally worth it when you get a good cut.

How far up in Ontario are we talking? If it's within a couple hours of the NY border, I'd be very tempted to come up and pick up some meat one of these days.

We are about an hour from Toronto, a couple hours from Kingston.

Google Maps will likely give you a pretty good estimate as to the time and distance

Just had the seasoned butterflied chicken we bought from there last night. DIVINE! Best chicken we've ever had.

Can't wait to see what we will pick up this week
