New BMW X3 M40, INSANE power delivery (2024)

I would not call it “insane” but it is impressive what BMW has done with the package.
These are track day machines. Your son should get it on a track with you, then you will truly get to experience its potential.
Funny you should mention the track, this was years ago but my son and I took some of their cars and drove on BMWs testing grounds (outdoor track) in South Carolina. They also bought dinner and lunch and put us up over night in the Hilton. Dinner was at Ruth Chris/

Insane is a term used for someone's experiences. Your experience might be different. To me it was insane as it gave me brief few second headache during acceleration, even though I was laughing at the pressure.

They still have that. They are still one of few companies that honor warranty if track vehicle.

Yeah, BMW tends to "understate" their engines' power. My B58 engine is rated at 340hp. Others with the same car have had their cars dyno'd and the results typically show that the engine is really producing close to 380hp, using a 15% driveline loss of power. I've owned 5 bimmers over the years, and every time I walk into the garage to use the car I smile. I've owned the car for 6 years!
Funny you should mention this. My son told me the same thing and to further this, when a Magazine like Car and Driver takes their BMWs on the track, the times and speeds like in this car beat BMWs published specifications. So you are correct. BMW is conservative in their claimed HP and run times. I suspect maybe they publish based on worst atmospheric conditions and then some. More or less they make sure you get what they publish.

I really don’t know. I don’t pay attention to 0-60. It is impressive result, don’t get me wrong.
But, next time you drive it pay attention on 40-80mph acceleration or 60-100mph. That is where the game is.
..
Good post but that goes for any car. I cant pay attention to the 40 to 80MPH times or 60 to 100 as I have to keep my eye on the road. One would need to check published figures for that. Im not the one timing the vehicle jsut relying on published material as we do for most other cars.
We/I repeatedly slammed on the gas at those speeds and still floored me against the seat. Its was stupid fast in the strongest sense of the word.
Even if these numbers were published most wouldnt know where to go to compare to other vehicles (at least I wouldnt nor would I car much)
I was just relaying my experience. I dont think street cars in general should be allowed to go this fast. It was stupid hitting 100MPH so easily and quickly.

@edyvw
Here you go! I see someone posted this on the speeds you mentioned.

I like that the BMWs don't scream look at me unless you go to a couple uber expensive models.

We had a 2019 X3 M40i as a trade in a few months back and I drove it to lunch one day. When I floored the throttle at 30mph and it rocketed forward I laughed like a school boy. The B58 is one of the best non-super car engines out there.
Funny you should say that. When in the passenger seat and my son demo'd the new BMW Launch Control. I felt the blood (I guess) rush in my head and actually (not kidding) quick but short headache as I was laughing like I would in a roller coaster. I had him do it a second time and I recorded my face with the phone camera because I was curious what I looked like.

Im a lot older now, but even as a kid I ALWAYS liked the look of the grill. Just looked classy and refined.
Ill never own one its just not on my life plans and disposable income, I live vicariously through my sons cars.

The elasticity, which is absolutely the most important variable among European automotive press, was focus of mild-hybrid system per BMW. That is cultural trait as that performance variable was focus of 90’s early 2000’s diesels where it was all about torque, not hp. In Europe among manufacturers elasticity was what here in the US is 0-60. The thing is, Europeans were right. Mazda for example literally fallowed people dropping kids to school to figure out how actually they drive vehicles, and realized that merging on interstate was when they use full power and behave most erratically due to conditions. That made them bet on turbo engine instead of V6.
Small electric engine comes really handy to improve those numbers and European companies are using them for quite some time, including diesels. It does help mpg as, well, one adds power without using fuel, but real benefit is mid range torque.

Thats kindof a hot take, thinking high 12 second cars should be banned from public roads, yeah?

Yeah Edy, Im sure the 11hp helps a little from a 40 roll, but I doubt you'll be able to quantify it well with numbers, just a but different seat of the pants. Maybe. When the pass through on my z06 opened, it was worth about 20whp per the dyno. In a 3200# car I could feel it sorta kinda.

BMW disagrees with you.
Also, you are obviously not familiar with torque wars in Europe when 5nm was a news. Companies are influenced a lot by their cultural and traditional traits. Also, in grand scheme of things, X3 M40 is not big seller for BMW on a global scale. But it is perfect platform to tune that system and execute it in 2.0ltr diesel.
Also, it is not about hp. It is about torque.

Edy will be happy that I have come to the dark side 😆

I did something similar down here at the Circuit of the Americas. Got a chance to put an M3 and M4 though its paces. It was high 80s F in the morning and by noon it was mid 90s F. These cars went 150mph with the AC on full blast like I was going down a highway at 60mph. Group after group did that, the cars were never shut down.

No electric can do this and that's why they only demo the 0-60mph.

I've done the 1-day school in Greer. It was a lot of fun and it changed the way I drive. We were in at the time E46 ZHP Autos. I so wanted to do the 2-day M school at Charlotte motorspeedway but was given a firm "No". LOL
