Interesting... I just bought some 0w30 a little less than a month ago and it didn't have the Titanium additive either. Bummer. I would've waited for this. Thanks for the heads up!

Can't do A3/B4 in a 30 grade with an ILSAC level of phosphorous.

This is where you see API/ILSAC unwind as they are targetting fuel economy HTHS, and 1qt/1,000 mile "normal" oil consumption.

The manufacturers producing the high performance 30s can't do SM, SN.

Trav, chicken and egg...

the OEMS want to be able to call 1qt/1000 miles "normal", so they don't have to do warranty repairs on cars that you or I would call lemons.

So they limit the P to levels that won't kill cats with that level of consumption.

What is most telling is that the 40s (and there's no US OEMS specifying 40s anymore) have a very much higher level of P available to them.for example, see the Oz site

http://castroledge.com.au/oils/5w30-a3/b4

the 5W30 is stuck at SL (with all other performance parameters SN), while the 5W40 is SN.

When (argumentatively), a 30 grade A3/B4 is probably a stouter oil with less consumption/volatility than a similar "W"ed 40.

Depends where car is. For US A3/B4 would be better suited. For Europe C3 version is preferred due to a better petrol used here.

I personally prefer A3/B4 over C3 oils ( in same price range), but don't really think that using it over C3 specified oil will help in any way in a normal day-to-day driving over 20k oci.

Nope, I think still the best oil for Euro gassers that require VW 502.00, MB 229.5, BMW LL-01. Problem is price compare to 0W40 version.
I used 0W30 before Wal Mart started to carry M1 for $26 5qt and Castrol 0W40 for same price. Best oil IMHO.

Trav, to put Shannow's response in another way, the SL-spec 0W30 in question has pretty much the exact same ZDDP levels that the SN-spec 0W40 or 5W40 equivalents would have (we're talking strictly ACEA Ax/Bx oils, NOT Cx oils). So really, there is no difference in "CAT harming" additive levels between the SL 30 grade and the SN 40 grade. This is because the API limits SN 20 and 30 grade oils in terms of allowable Phos levels, but does not limit SN 40 or 50 grade oils. So, an oil can have a lot of ZDDP and be called SN if it is 40/50 grade, but the exact same oil in a 30 grade cannot be called SN (must be SL).

So choose any ACEA A3/B4 rated oil with appropriate VW specs for the car in question and don't worry about the semantics behind the SL/SN ratings (where they largely do not have any relevance in this case).
