The mechanic was obviously using too heavy an oil. The startup noise was due to a comparably inadaquate initial oil flow and the viscous drag of 20w-50 oil, cut his MPGs by at least 2 MPG. The story is not over though, I expect that when all the gunk is cleaned out and the rings seal better, his performance will improve. This remains to be seen.

This has probably already been asked - but has Amsoil dropped that surcharge now that a barrel of oil cost less than a qt of SSO?
Amsoil dropped the surcharge months ago, but the industry pipeline still has NOT dropped prices on additives and base oils.......and I say it's about time!!

I noticed that the SSO was unusually dark at my last oil change. Did Amsoil change the formula or something?
You mean the new oil, or used oil? The formula hasn't changed.

It was the used oil. It is normally a light amber color at change time. It was a much darker last change, with no difference in driving patterns or mileage.
I am going to put 4,000 miles on the SSO this go round to see if there any changes in the UOA.

Running SSO for 4k miles is a WASTE. If you don't go AT LEAST 10k you need to run something else.

People believe all the claims about Amsoil except that it lasts longer.
True, but Im sure the dealers love the repeat business
