New Ad from Castrol

Looks like their 0W40 Euro FS is going up against the popular M1. 5qts for $27.48 at Walmart, but not available in my area or any of the nearer outlets. Curious on opinions as to preferences vs M1 Euro FS 0W40 for a 2016 BMW 328i F30 rear wheel manual trans, my go-to oil. Based on my location (Michigan) I only consider 0W weight FS oils but appreciate a 5W would be fine for 99% of the time.

Question for you guys, is the "5X performance against low temperature wear" just marketing BS? Because one use case for me would be throwing that in my Generac which may have to start and run inside 10 seconds in a winter storm
I'd recommend a 5W40 for that application since Houston doesn't get super cold in winter but you can use the higher viscosity for hot weather. I assume your generator does the weekly startup and run 10 minutes diagnostic test so it always is well lubed.

I'm running 5W-30 currently with no issue, just ran for over 6 days and the UOA came back good

Some of the claims can be substantiated, others it's hard to tell. The 5x lower temp wear is one I could not really understand.

I always think it's funny when they try to quantify the performance of their products without any real data or comparison.

The last time Castrol was big on this forum was German Castrol, which goes back well over a decade lol.

I think EDGE EP (prior version) was good just didn't get as much attention as the other brands for whatever reason.

I'm curious about this new stuff. Sounds like their next gen.

How they came up with 50x on the IIIH is beyond me. That test is severe and tests for piston deposits and viscosity control under high temperatures.

I'll say this, the off-shelf oils are really good now.
Honestly, you’re right. Is there much separating any of these off the shelf oils right now when they meet the same certification and are used for the same application? I just got back from Walmart, I ended up buying Mobil1 EP 5W30 for my car, I figured…for $26 bucks why should I bother with something else? I was tempted to try the 0W40 FS or the 0W30 ESP but I’m driving a Toyota, do I need that? I wish someone could tell me what the best off the shelf oil is because I’d buy it, until then I may just stick with the Mobil1 EP.

They've likely taken the Sequence IVA limit or some similar one and their product has wear 5x below that limit. Voila! Of course that doesn't mean their major competitors aren't just as good, if not better.

Castrol has a large presence in the DIFM installer market in Canada.
Canadian Tire is one of the largest service garages in Canada, and Castrol is the oil used. CT also has it on sale on the shelves more than other oils.
Wakefield Canada does a great job of promoting Castrol products; I suspect a good chunk of cars on the road run Castrol oils.

Always been a fan of the black bottle/jug. The Palisade has used nothing but Castrol. The Malibu's current fill is the same and may remain so.

Not sure about in USA but up here in Canadastan, it is more expensive than Mobil, by a solid 10-15%. Not worth it IMO.
It is here too. I started using Castrol when I bought my VW, but it's harder to find the euro stuff on the shelf at Walmart, so I've had to grab Mobil 1 0w40 a couple of times in it's place. I eventually just started grabbing the Mobil 1 for $3 less a jug anyway. It continues to be my go to oil 15+ years and running.

My 2.7L EcoBoost-equipped F-150 currently has silver-bottled Castrol GTX Full Syn 5W30 in it, which interestingly is not available for sale at Advance Auto. I mostly bought it because they ran a Nascar diecast send-away promo if you bought a 5 quart jug of Castrol at Autozone, but the truck seems to like it just fine, compared to its usual diet of Walmart Supertech Full Syn.

I don't have tons of data and like M1. However, in one of our summer trips to Nevada with a loaded car, M1 FS 0W-40 burned may be 1/3 to 1/2 qt. for the 6-7K miles OCI that included the ~2600 miles trip. Nothing alarming but the car doesn't burn any oil.

Next year same trip, same timeframe with Castrol Euro 0W-40 and 0 burn. But the weird thing was that I find black residue on one edge of the dipstick. This happened couple times when I checked the oil level. Something I had never seen before. The oil didn't look any darker than M1.

Same trip with my favorite M1 EP 10W-30 and 0 burn. This oil does NOT burn in any of our cars old or new!

Another summer, few long local trips (not as hot and/or fast) with M1 FS 0W-40 and 0 burn!I

So not enough experience with 0W-40s as I prefer narrower spread oils like M1 EP 10W-30 but I have some M1 Euro 5W-40 and Castrol Euro 5W-30 to experiment with next. I keep finding these "Euro" oils on sale and can't resist. lol

Castrol has a huge presence in the Walmarts in Ontario. They always have the largest display out front and center, and have way more of it in stock than M1. Although that might also indicate that it doesn’t sell as well if there is always so much more of it…
Castrol is the best selling PCMO in Canada and they've pushed very hard to attain that status.

In the US, they're often overlooked as people tend to lean toward Mobil or Pennzoil more often.

You don't give product that sells slow a lot of shelf space, unless there's a huge profit margin of course.

Exactly. Stores are carefully maximizing profit per square foot. You don't eat up a bunch of space with a product that won't move.
