We got these in our latest shipment from Castrol. Don't think it's anything new, but thought it was interesting they claim to be "3X stronger than Mobil", and in the fine print they say "in viscosity breakdown as measured in Kurt Orbahn test on 5w-30 grade."

Packaging looks rather generic.
Not sure if shelf appeal is a factor in sales?

I loved the old "green" Castrol but went negative on BP when they were caught price fixing propane (I had a propane heated house at the time).
That's their new "modern" new look, I guess. I always thought Castrol's packaging had more shelf appeal than any of the other major brands, except for maybe some of the Valvoline products.

They now claim "50x better high temp performance as measured in the sequence IIIH test vs API SP test limits" for the gold bottle ep. I wish they'd post these alleged test results on their site instead.

I don't think any Full Syn oil these days (within a given price range) can be outperforming another by 50x or 3x ...

It most likely comes down to 3x or 50x of 0 is still 0 i.e. insignificant.

Having said that, I like Castrol when on sale. 🤣 Wal-Mart had Euro 5W-30 Edge on sale last week. I got one for the price!

I'm sure they don't care about what I think, but I do not like their new packaging at all. The Castrol name looks cartoonish. For me shelf appeal is a factor.

I’m interested in this Kurt Orbann test, he was a fine singer for Nirvana.

I noticed the new bottles last night at Walmart, for some reason they did catch my eye. Is it just me or has Castrol become the least relevant of the “big 4”…Valvoline, Mobil1, Pennzoil, Castrol?

It’s just, they never seem to get the headlines anymore…Valvoline got the attention recently from “Restore and Protect”. Mobil1 always seems to get headlines and has so many different oils and formulas. Pennzoil has the mysterious Ultra and gas to liquid. Castrol had the gold bottle 20,000 mile oil, that no one can find on the shelves anymore. They used to be the euro kings, now that seems to have changed too. I don’t think the bottle redesign is going to help.

The last time Castrol was big on this forum was German Castrol, which goes back well over a decade lol.

I think EDGE EP (prior version) was good just didn't get as much attention as the other brands for whatever reason.

I'm curious about this new stuff. Sounds like their next gen.

How they came up with 50x on the IIIH is beyond me. That test is severe and tests for piston deposits and viscosity control under high temperatures.

I'll say this, the off-shelf oils are really good now.

I could care less about what the bottle looks like. It could be white with a label that says "Castrol Oil" and the specs/certifications. As long as everything is true, and the bottle is sealed, I don't care.

Castrol has a huge presence in the Walmarts in Ontario. They always have the largest display out front and center, and have way more of it in stock than M1. Although that might also indicate that it doesn’t sell as well if there is always so much more of it…

Question for you guys, is the "5X performance against low temperature wear" just marketing BS? Because one use case for me would be throwing that in my Generac which may have to start and run inside 10 seconds in a winter storm
