Neighbor’s Cruze sounds awful. What is it?

This noise is recent and happened instantly, not gradually. The engine gurgles and grumbles loudly. Sounds like an old Mercedes diesel. A high pitched ticking noise also accompanies the grumbling sound. The noise gets louder with rpm’s. This is not a knocking or a ticking noise. It is LOUD. looks like a 2014 Cruze.

Any ideas what it could be? Used to be a quiet running car.

My guess, timing chain guide failed and chain is flopping around.

And valve timing off as well.

what engine is in it? they did come with a diesel engine aswell (actually 3 different diesel engines over time)

Those diesel cruises in hatchback form were sweet.

If someone is willing to continue driving with it sounding like that, it's no wonder how it got that way.

Turbo? Maybe an unhappy accessory like AC clutch?
My car in N makes some pretty bad noises in a cold start below -10C. Trans is fine otherwise so I just drive it.
