Need thick-sided 5w30 recommendations

Given that I saw GM recommending d1G2 for some Euro gas DIT applications some months ago, maybe they are just going to bag having LSPI tests for d2?? The whole point seemed to be to recommend one standard for gas and diesel cars and they have already gotten away from that.
Given that the enigmatic article referencing the Opel guy stated that the LSPI tests would not cover the "old" grades (assuming they meant thicker than XW20), anyway, d2 means nothing to me as far as my present vehicle is concerned.

I never ended up running any d2 oils unless you want to count the Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 that now seems to be d2 (this was before d1G2), but I hope nobody worried about LSPI ran them because of what I was posting here! The VOAs I have seen for that ESP as well as the Pennzoil Euro L 5W30 do tend to suggest that they should be LSPI-resistant, though.

Ha, I figured out what was going on! The author of the article confused between dexos1 Gen 2 and dexos2! In most places in the article, he means dexos1 Gen 2 by dexos2! Also note that the article is from 2014 or 2015.

It's an awfully misrepresenting article to say the least. It's talking about the new dexos1 Gen 2 specification while referring to it as dexos2.

These are the full dexos1 (2010), dexos1 Gen 2 (2015), and dexos2 (2009) specs (Excel workbook).

*Unless you have a turbo GDI engine - don't worry about LSPI ! ... For normally aspirated non - turbo GDI engines not reaching higher RPM's all the time (like a turbo) - then Quaker State Synthetic 5W30 Ultimate Durability is a thick 30 weight which is LSPI protected with D1 Gen 2 rating and HTHS of about 3.1 ... Then there are the Pennzoil Platinum Euro L and Mobil 1 ESP 5W30 oils which are thicker yet 30 weight oils . My next fill will be Pennzoil Platinum Euro L 5w30 in my '17 Sonata non - turbo GDI engine (12 viscosity @ 100° C and an HTHS of 3.5) - now this is about as thick of a 5w30 synthetic as you will see (Mobil 1 ESP 5W30 is close) !

I thought the article referencing the Opel guy kept calling dexos2 "new" because it was brand new for 2017 or whenever it was written!
I am shocked to find out that d2 is actually a teeny bit older than d1, thought it was basically being introduced for the first time about when d1G2 was coming out.
I guess the only "diesel" oil I ever looked at carefully before was Rotella T6 5W40...

Thanks to everyone for teaching me the ropes on all this stuff. My first oil change will be April..... right around 4K on the odometer.

I'm leaning towards the Castrol Magnatec (new recipe) and Quaker State. Both Mobil 1 ESP and Platinum Euro-L have no Magnesium in their recipes and neither are SN+.

The new Magnatec had it's cst@100 kicked upstairs to 10.25 and I'm fine with that mid-level viscosity. Valvoline Modern Engine is too expensive for my upcoming 5K OCI rituals.. Modern should be priced like their Advanced lineup.

The article is from 2014. dexos1 Gen 2 came in 2015. He's referring to dexos1 Gen 2 and the new xW-20 grades included with it when he says dexos2. The article is not about dexos2 at all. It's a mere confusion between dexos1 Gen 2 and dexos2 on the author's part.

Different levels of sulfur in fuel than what's in the US?

Except that's not true anymore. Sulfur levels were lowered Jan ‘17 and then lowered again this month. They now average about 2ppm higher than central Europe.

This I was unaware of.

Not looking to include High Mileage oils or Diesel oils, or boutique oils like Red Line, Royal Purple, Amsoil.....etc.
Matters-not if the oil is conventional, semi-syn or full synthetic. Just want my 5W30 on the thick side.

Chevron Supreme 5w30 - Walmart on line @ $12.42 for 5 quart jug.
Just bought 6 jugs, free 2 day delivery. I ordered them Sunday and they arrived Tuesday.

I believe I found something better than the Castrol Magnatec 5w30. It's the reformulated Castrol Edge 5w30. All I'm missing is the SN Plus rating. Castrol's Product Data webpage for it is down today.

I will await another VOA in the next couple months, before purchasing it. Micron numbers could send me back to Magnatec and Quaker State Ultimate Durability.

I ran Quaker State Ultimate Durability for the previous 2 years; Never thought I'd say it, but, The New Valvoline Advanced 5w30 dances on Shell's grave - it's THAT good. [ RIP NIssan 2014 Rogue traded it for $7000. VW dealer sold it for $12500. last week. Only On the lot for a month.]

The new Edge 5w30 is d1g2 and sn+ along with a new label design. We got a bunch of it at work.

My Walmart must have a bunch of old stock. Still showing SN and A1/B1.

*If Chevy recommends the Mobil 1 Euro ESP synthetic oil for the Corvette then I believe LSPI is not an issue ... What then would be the issue if I run the Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 in my Hyundai 2.4L (non - turbo) ? Also how about the Pennzoil Euro L 5W30 in my same Sonata ? While not long drain oils , I'm not worried because I plan OCI's of less than <5,000 miles any way in my Hyundai 2.4L GDI fuel diluting , soot producing , rod bearing chewing , in-line 4 cylinder wonder power plant . Comments ?

I'm not seeing any evidence that any of the three Corvette engines has Direct Inject.

I also have a new 2.4 D.I. I go the school that preaches that unless the motor oil is of the same weight as described in the owners manual and the back of the jug says Dexos1/Gen2 SN Plus, I'm not pouring that jug inside my engine.

I have two jugs of Castrol Syntec 0w40 in the basement. I'll use them in April, inside my two Chevys.

According to Chevy's Website, the 6.2L V8 is GDI.

That was wholesale value on the Rogue. Had sickness in the family so I didn't want to deal with a brake job, and new tires and a recon then wait maybe a month to sell for say $10K. I wanted the end of year VW deal. Yes I blew it. Really bothers my Scottish side !
