What I was attempting to uncover in this thread is a low-sap, thick 5w30 oil. But I cannot find a single one. Both Valvoline Modern Engine and Castrol Magnatec 5w30s are real thin... approx 9.5 and 9.8 cst@100. Thick premium oils like Pennzoil Ultra Platinum are thicker and great at cleaning pistons. Quaker State Ultimate Durability also. But neither one is a carbon-fighter.

The hunt for an engine oil for my new Hyundai Santa Fe 2.4 engine continues......

What carbon are you trying to fight?

Direct Inject.
Also want very good timing chain antiwear

..... trying to avoid oils with mention of diesel attributes/applications..... ie... Mobil 1 ESP, Pennzoil Platinum Euro-L..... etc.

If I were changing the oil today, I'd be buying the thin Castrol Magnatec and OEM filter.

I'll look into using the TCW-3 dblshock.... thanks. Excuse my diesel ignorance, but is controling ash content is the same as controlling carbon content?

So oils with mention of diesel attributes (Dexos2 ratings specifically) are good enough for the new Corvette gasoline engines but not good enough for a Hyundai 2.4? Wow. Good luck on your search, let us know when you find the unicorn oil and how it turns out. Sorry for my incredulity on this.

Don't be sorry Subie! I'm not offended! Thanks for your help in this thread.
I'm just not going to buy diesel application oils for my 2.4. If I must, I'll buy the passenger vehicle 9.5-9.8 cst@100 thin stuff, that's meant for my particular gas engine. Valvoline Modern Engine and Castrol Magnatec are two examples.

I have it easier than the other two vehicles I considered purchasing. Both the Chevrolet Equinox and the Honda CRV only offer engines that are direct-inject, but also have standard turbos attached.

In 5-7 more years, GM will have plenty of complaints of engine problems with the Equinox.
Honda? - I dunno, but I'm guessing yes to them also.
So many new 2019 Equinox owners are going to use basic oils that they've always used in the past decade or-so.
That spells trouble-ahead, in the long run.

I am first and last owner of all my vehicles. I like to find out very early, what to use in my new vehicles. That's because I keep them for almost two decades. Rust is usually what gets them to the junkyard about 18 years later. Thank you-not Michigan for all that salt spread on our winter roads.

Well, you have been given suggestions that meet your needs, but I guess they aren't made from unicorn tears so they are ignored.....SMH.

Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5W30 meets all your OP requirements.

Now you're just being difficult though. Just because an oil lists itself as being capable in diesel applications does not mean you should rule it out. Looking at the description of Pennzoil Euro L, it fits your needs exactly. Sure it mentions light duty diesels, but it also mentions high performance gasoline engines and it will also keep things very clean for direct injection. Here is a quote from the Pennzoil website:

Quote
Pennzoil Platinum® Euro Full Synthetic Motor Oil with PurePlus Technology™

Get complete protection from the only motor oil recommended by Ferrari North America,* and Maserati. Pennzoil Platinum® Euro motor oils far exceed the most stringent car manufacturer requirements for cleanliness and protection, based on BMW, Maserati and Ferrari specifications. Pennzoil Platinum® Euro Full Synthetic motor oils can be used for modern light duty diesel engines, as well as high performance gasoline engines. Nothing keeps your engine closer to factory clean1 than Pennzoil Platinum Euro Full Synthetic.

Sounds like this oil is EXACTLY what you are looking for. What more can we say here?

These are all great oils and far exceed anything the OP needs or wants. +1 it seems he is either being difficult for the sake of being difficult or a total lack of understanding.

How about either answering the question, or removing yourself from the conversation. You added nothing, and added nothing but a half-azzed opinion. Matters not what you think, matters what the OP is seeking

The Pennzoil or Castrol that you say are on the thin side are they acceptable to you? If not use the thicker Quaker State Ultimate Durability also Dexos1 Gen2 . A lot of different oils have been suggested, I think you've exhausted your options, now it's time to choose.

This is a GDI engine. Therefore, stay away from any Euro oil, including Pennzoil Platinum Euro. No Euro oil currently has LSPI protection. In fact, Euro oils are the worst when it comes to LSPI induction since LSPI is caused by high calcium and virtually all Euro oils have high calcium.

ACEA admits that they have failed to include LSPI protection and they are currently working hard on it to catch up with ILSAC.

If you want thick oil with LSPI protection, there is Chevron Delo XSP 5w30 and 5W-40:

Id thought Dexos2 oil also passed LSPI tests? Which Pennzoil Euro L and most of Euro meets Dexos 2.

Nope, dexos1 Gen 2, not dexos2. dexos2 hasn't been updated.

Different levels of sulfur in fuel than what's in the US?

How is it that in the land of GM, Dexos2 oil is so rare?
Is it "The Cobblers son has no shoes" effect?

Use ACDelco Dexos2

What is this "Hate" for sulfur?

Because GM cars can run cheaper HDEO and run for years …
See standard US compact Chevy below

Legacy engines run legacy oil.

Wrong. Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 Formula has only about 1000ppm of calcium. Euro L 5w30 is not that bad either, at about 1600. Euro L 0w30 has only around 1400ppm.
