This girl that know has had issues corrdinating her lease for her new apartment. I have known her for a year, as we have has several classes together at the university. Her lease ends at her old apt apartment on the 30th and her new apartment will not be ready until the 5th. She got laid off so she is tight on money and she was going to go and stay in a hotel for the time with money she doesn't really have. I have been their, I was homeless and street bound at one point. I don't want her to have that feeling so I have offered her my apartment for that time. I will be out of town during that time and told her that won't be a problem. She is not a party girl, very private, and clean so I figured she could "watch over the place while I'm gone". She sent me a text that reads " you don't mind me at your apartment alone?" After that text I have begun to wonder why she'd say that. I have thought about it and made my desicion before I told her that was fine.
I have had people that opened their doors to me without second thoughts, who have become like family to me, so its in my nature to give others a hand when they are down on their luck.
Am I making a mistake here?
Thanks,
Dusty

She should be speaking with the leasing agent to establish a month-to-month deal, if she can afford it.

If you know here well, then fine. If you have any doubts whatsoever, then I would absolutely not let her stay at my place alone, unless the place was empty with nothing of value around.

I think it's hard to say. I believe your judge of character comes into play here and hopefully its steering you correctly. chances are it will work out fine, small chance there could be trouble.

I know who I'd let live in my place alone, and who I wouldn't.

Things of value come with me on my road trip.... 12 gauge and my mac pro.... Nothing else here really.. I'm in college so I have had to consolidate my belongings to live here.... truck, tools, my other 15 or so guns are at my buddy's ranch.
That statement in the text makes me uneasy...

Alone... She perhaps is taken away by the fact that you hardly know her and are letting her take your place.

Make sure to take all your valuable or semi-valuable stuff, and then it's on you to judge character and hope for the best if she is going to stay.

I'd lay some ground rules in a passive way (my landlord thinks only one person lives here so I need to be sure that it is clear that only one does; I've had issues with the neighbors due to noise, so..., etc.).

And what does your GF or wife say about this arrangement ?

I would be very cautious. If she is tight on money because she was laid off, how will she be able to pay her new lease at her new apartment ? She might be a guest longer than you originally planned.

LT,
I'm not married, no woman in the picture. I must make it clear that I'm not looking for something in return here...she would owe me nothing. She has a new job that she starts soon.
I'm not attracted to her, Just don't want to see her end up in a hotel....been there, done that.. If it was a buddy, my door would be open as well, with an air mattress in the living room. I don't discriminate here, its not my place to... I did that at my other apartment when I found out a buddy was sleeping in his truck in 36* weather when his GF called it off. I didn't even think twice..

She may have just said it to be thankful for your trust. It is hard to get the context sometimes the way thing are said in text messages as when speaking. I am sure it was just an innocent message. I don't know her though so I could be wrong but I think you are OK. BTW, a very nice thing to do on your part.

Perhaps she asked out of disbelief that you were being so kind. Given the fact that there are not any valuables around, I'd go for it and feel good about it.

^^^This^^^

From the limited amount that I've seen of you on this board, you seem an okay guy... So if you originally thought her to be a good person and trusted her enough to take your pad for a few days, then I'd say that you should allow her to do so.

Dr Dusty is restoring my hope in humanity. I have done similar things many times and it has yet to bite me. I am with you- people helped me and we should pay it forward.

Good to know "peeing in her cowl" is not the answer here.

The response could have been along the lines, of "Not a problem, why do you ask? - All I expect is that the place not be trashed, partied in...."

Good on you.

Bigmike,
She might be, I really don't know. I just haven't given it much thought. I have to finish my Summer classes and then I'm taking a little break. I have told her she is more than welcome to it. I have put way for time into school than into relationships.

A suggestion if you don't live in a studio apartment. Get a good lock for your bedroom door. Put what you don't want stolen in your bedroom. She can sleep on your couch for 5 days. Also get renters insurance: It is only $250-$300 a years. If your bedroom door is forced open, it is proof that your were burglarized. Insurance will pay for what is missing. You should have renters insurance anyways.

That is my take on it.

This situation may reaffirm people's faith in humanity or utterly destroy it.
