I happen to have 8 cars with 4 of them easy to spec an oil while 4 are tougher. The Focus uses 5W-20 dino, the Sable and 626 use 5W-30 dino and all are changed at 5,000 miles my choice over the years. The Cougar uses 10W-30 Valvoline VR-1 since it has a performance cam and 120 lb. spring pressure.

The other 4 engines are a FE 410-4V with 153,000 miles, a FE 360-2V with 75,000 miles, a LA 360-2V with 75,000 miles and a 289-2V with 15,000 miles all stock flat tappet engines. I hear somewhat conflicting info in that zddp, while important for cams with high spring pressure, it is not "as" critical for stock spring pressures especially older engines. Eventually the first three engines will be rebuilt while the 289 is. These cars put about 1500 miles a year on them and so I change oil every two years. Unsure if left sitting longer is good or not. My question is what oil, or oils, might be useful for these four engines and their needs?

+1 Buy something in bulk and enjoy. Supertech wouldnt be a bad choice either. Great for 5k runs and cheaper then most brands

+1 to the above. I've seen it in several O'Reillys in California this year.

For the focus and sable, just get 5W20 oil. Ford backspecced 5W20 to the 1993 model year. I ran 5W30 in my 2003 and i am switching to 5W20 next change, so it is back to stock.

OFF TOPIC, well, mabe. I just recently went and visited the USS Lexington. Had a blast! I can see how thoes big old ships are fun to play on.
BACK ON TOPIC. Back in my hot rod days, i really had great luck out of vwb 10w-30. One motor specific with brodex heads, solid lifted roller cam and spring pressure at 160 psi (how I got these heads is a long story). The motor in my truck spun a bearing so...being the only motor I had on hand was the 355 with the brodex heads. Believe it or not, it is still running today...had 120k on that motor when I sold her. Never had a problem with that oil in the hot rods!

Thanks, for the suggestions. The HDEO is an obvious choice being easy to source.

Here is another question. It has been my understanding that zddp is essentially a sacrificial additive in the sense that the amount in oil declines as the oil goes through it's cycle. So an older SL oil, at say 1500 ppm phosphorous and zinc, would have dropped by the time the oil hits the 5000 mile mark. If that were the case couldn't oil with less zddp be used if it were in a car like mine seeing only 2000 miles per OCI? Just brainstorming.

As far as the USS Hornet I have been a ship/plane restoration volunteer since May 1998. Currently the only person responsible for a WWII torpedo bomber and the entire island superstructure or anywhere else my talents are needed. Has enable me to visit a lot of mothballed ships in the Reserve Fleet for parts hunting from battleship USS Iowa down to a small USCG icebreaker. Oh, the Iowa was only toured since she was always destined to be a museum so no parts were ever touched.
