Has anyone used an oversized filter with the QRD 25 engine?
I know it is only a 2.5 liter four cylinder engine but the filter it uses is SUPER small! I want to use something larger for my AutoRX rinse cycle, the sump capacity is 4.3 quarts and the filter is the size of a decent shot glass, I think it might get clogged.
Any ideas?

Stock WIX filter is:

See if the following WIX fits:

Part Number: 51344

Other options are:
Purolator PL24458
Amsoil SDF-36

As always, personally verify clearances and proper seal.

I have a 03 2.5 also, this filter seems smaller than a early V-45 Magna Honda Motorcycle oil filter. Will a larger filter reduce quick start up oil pressure, my layman's logic is the more oil in filter the harder to get a quick oil pressure flow especially cold. Should one stick to a Nissan engineered and sized filter?

To note, a PH43 is the filter for my Datsun 720 series truck, I now use a ph8 fram which is for a large ford v-8 and is twice size of PH43, it doesn't seem to change much but the truck is old and I dont worry about things like that on it, The Altima I do.

Its an issue if the oil filter has no ADBV.
Most of the filters in that size do!

Nissan has other sized filters that might work if they fit.

What PN and brand are you using?

Oil is a liquid. Liquids are classically uncompressable. As long as the ADBV is doing it's job, i.e., keeping the filter full of oil, there is no difference.

That is a personal decision you will have to make for yourself. While it's usually prudent to follow manufacturer's recommendations, let's not forget these same manufacturers produced sludge monsters, bad sealing manifold gaskets, head gaskets that blow, camshafts that wear out prematurely, shooting spark plug cylinder heads, engines prone to piston slap, etc, etc.

Further, not all of my owner's manuals recommend or even mention the use of synthetics. However, I believe there's a substantial body of evidence that indicates they are superior for use in extreme conditions and can be economical for extended OCIs.

Just to give your layman's logic another practical view...

Take a shop vac ...X CFM in ...X CFM out ..the large chamber merely lowers the velocity through the intermediate chamber ...double the size ..or half it ..the rate of flow through it is the same. Speed, not volume, varies.

Thanks, one other consideration, I cant prefill this filter on Oil Change, horizontal mount. Is this why Nissan designed a small filter in creating less volume to fill at startup on OC with dry filter? Would a larger filter be problematic in engineering with more volume to prefill in filter at dry filter startup?

If it was I, I'd figure out how much I could prefill a larger filter before it spilled out upon installation. Then the left over volume would be close to the original volume.

Also, if dry starts were a problem during filter changes, why would they design a filter mount location that forces dry starts?
