Hi guys, I'm still struggling with the synthetic issue. Heres the situation.

The car is an Acura RSX with 100K miles on it. It sees -25 for a few days each winter, and + 30 in the worst of the summer. ALSO, it may see a considerably light track day once or twice a season. But very light, more like a spirited drive! which the cars sees on occasion.

I'm running conventional, and I'm concerned switching will increase oil consumption at over 100K (these engines are notorious for burning). I'm thinking agressive drives and extreme cold the car sees in the winter, conventional might not cut it. Am I worried about nothing? Right now, I'm running conventional Mobil 1000 (new canadian stuff) and am religeous about oil changes. The car feels great with it, and I run 5W20. Any help, is really appreciated!

Thanks,
Ryan

You could try Mobil 1 High Mileage oil.

I don't think switching would matter much for consumption if you keep it at 5-20.

If you keep your oil changes short and your current oil is working for you don't switch.

I guess I would first run a treatment of Auto-rx. Then switching to synth should be fine. JMO, but I know I did it to my Jetta when I first bought it w/ 66k on it just cause I didn't know the history. Felt better knowing I was putting the synth into a clean (or at least cleaner) engine.

Find out if that engine is prone to sludging. That may be the reason these engines are consuming oil. Switching to Synth would slove that for the most part.

May I suggest the sister product to Mobil's oils -- Esso (Imperial Oil) XD-3, in the 0w30 synth flavour?

Basically it will cost an extra $5-$7 per oil change over conventional, but the 0W in the winter definitely helps with the cold starts.

Don't know why those particular engines start to increase their oil burning, but basically, a HDEO synth will help to keep the rings as clean and as lubricated as possible. Ring wear and/or ring sticking could be the cause of the additional consumption, and a HDEO can go a long ways towards keeping everything nice and clean.

Ryan ..let alone your brief bout with -25 ..there's absolutely no doubt that there would be a synthetic in my sump.

Worst case: So what if you consume some oil? (unlikely) It's not like it's from "damage".

BOLDLY walk down that aisle of Khrappy Tyre and load up your arms with synthetic oil.

LOL, okay okay, I'm convinced. I think its slow at work right now, and I've got nothing else to worry about!

My OCI are 6 months, but I dont put a lot of K's on the car either. I change it more because its bumper to bumper, and not a lot of driving.

You guys are right. I'll make the move, I dont think I'll be happy until I do.

Thanks again.

Ryan
