Need help with noisey 2500HD brakes

I'm posting this for my friend. He has a 2005 Chevy 2500HD 4X4 with noisy brakes.

He's tried everything he can think of and still they make all kinds of racket.

The problem: Brakes are quiet for a couple of months, then they start to squeal, then the pads rattle in their brackets making even more noise.

So far he's basically replaced everything 3 times. First was a shop replacing calipers, brackets, pads and turned the rotors. Second time, the shop re-did the work in an attempt to fix it. Third time, he took matters into his own hands. He replaced everything again, including new rotors. He is using Wagner Thermo Quiet pads and has tried lubes and and sound deadening goo as well as none at all. The abutment clips are in place as well.

Basically they start quiet, then they squeal, then finally they become so loose in the brackets, that when he hits a bump, the pads will bounce/rattle really bad. He even showed me how loose they are by taking a screw driver and reaching in through the rim and moving them up and down.

Has anyone run into this before?

I wonder if some clips, shims, etc got lost when the first job was done.

The only reason this occurs is the retaining spring clips are not correct.

If the clips are correctly installed the pads will not rattle. Many new pads do not come with hardware.

The squealing may be unrelated.

Unlikely because the job was done twice before he did the work, then he replaced EVERYTHING. The re-man'ed calipers came with new abutment clips.

I could agree that the squealing may be unrelated, but I'm not so sure he installed the clips incorrectly. He's no mechanical dunce. It is however, something that I will mention and see if we can re-evaluate.

I own several vehicles with virtually identical brake setups. They aren't very tricky as brakes go.

I have found that some brands of pads simply do not fit correctly, though. I can't recall who made them, but they were simply smaller than factory and they were loose.

The caliper itself can also rattle. Just grasping...
