So I volunteered to change the oil in my girlfriends
accent ~~80,000 miles 1.6L 3.5qt sump +.35qt filter. It went ok except the dipstick is HEAVILY varnished over halfway up.. and looks like tar on the bottom. Its been getting bulk 5w30 at a hyundai dealer.. She used to deliver papers 4 days a week(about 400total weekly) and had been known to go 6000+ miles(this oil change was 2500miles but previous to that was 7500)

I need suggestions.
Currently has 1.5qt delo 15w40, 2qt havoline 5w30 and some auto rx with pure1 filter.
I was planning on running all 15w40 delo as soon
as the temps here start staying over 20degrees.

The tracker was even worse.. ~~143k miles1.6L engine.Oil cap had tons of sludge. Horrible varnish and crud on the dipstick. Oil drained out.... Chunky. It had been sometime between 7000 and 18000 miles since last oil change. Bulk 5w30 conventional at dealer. However the oil filter was loose and leaking about 1qt every 2weeks and the engine was seeping some oil. It was used for delivery of aprox 1500-2000papers weekly.
4.4qt sump(with filter?)
I put about 2.5qt delo 15w40 rest havoline 5w30 and about 8oz of lc20 i had around (why not eh?)
Also used pure1 filter.

Anyone want to be brave and offer future maintence suggestions.. I would like to eventually get the hyundai to 6month-10000 mile oci but I dont think its possible with that small of a sump?
The tracker well I'm not sure how much it leaks/seeps and how much it was loosing from the loose oil filter.

If anyone wants nightmares I can snap some pics on sunday not the chunky oil though.. it was burbling and NASTY when it was draining ugh.

Thanks for any suggestions

Rand

Edit: Edited for clarity.

My dad and I used to deliver papers ten years ago, our Ford Ranger was running 3 hours a day/35 miles stop and go seven days a week. We did 3k OCI and no sludge. Delivering papers is severe service. 3k oci with dino in that kind of driving max. If your using straight diesel oil, 5-6k oci. if you really want to get rid of the sludge, auto-rx those beasts.

I didnt have 2 bottles on hand. I did put some LC20 in the tracker.. I guess for lack of reason not to lol.

oh and the tracker is her dad's and I doubt he would pay 25$ for auto rx... Maybe if I show him before and after pics of the hyundai filler cap, view looking into the engine and dipstick.

He might shell out for it... I was planning on running mainly delo in the tracker too as it might clean it out decently by itself... well better than bulk dealer oil anyway eh.

Stick with a diesel oil with frequent 3k changes. If the engine is running well, don't bother doing anything else. Use a synthetic diesel oil or thinner 10w30 diesel oil for winter use.

If you think that they'll run better, then invest in those products to clean that engine.

I would never consider 6mo/10k interval on a WORKED vehicle.

I also wouldn't pay extra for a pureone filter for those neglected engines. They probably have room for an oversized option. Use the supertech or puro premium filter and spend more money on better oil or more frequent oil changes.

Make sure both vehicles or venting correctly. Replace/clean those possible sludged up PCV valves. And, make sure both vehicles are running at the correct temp. Replace the thermostats and flush the coolant.
A good tuneup(plugs/wire/o2 sensor/FI cleaner) will go a long way to keep the oil clean.

Purolator PremiumPLUS "L", Pep Boys "PPL" 14619, or NAPA Silver 21626. WAY oversize, but Hyundais generally have room to spare.

If the expensive Auto-Rx is not an option, use cheap 10w30 Super Tech oil and filters -- change every 2K. If you can find the quart bottle Rislone... not the smaller bottle concentrate, use a half quart of it - in place of a half-quart of Super Tech.

Doing this will slowly improve matters inside your engine.

Delo and 5-20 is better mix unless you're trying for 40. 40 in the suki might be a good idea.
I'd check the egr along with pcv. On the pcv check , along with the valve I'd also check the hose and change the grommet unless the pcv valve fits in it like a cork in a wine bottle.

My 99 accent 12 valve 1.5 has a murky dipstick but still perfect honey colored rockers (I had the valve cover off for a new gasket). It's possible the dipstick tube is just off in the cold breeze and never warms up.

Walmart's supertech filter listed for the hyundai is tiny. If you have an autozone they have a valucraft 2808 which'll fit and is bigger. Advance auto has the aa3593a for that car. That's it for
If you can get delo 30 weight at autozone for $1/gal, you can use that and a block heater for frequent OCIs.

The hyundai manual states 10w30, 10w40 or 10w50 are acceptable. I was just trying to get the pour/crank temp lower with the 5w30. I figured Havoline would be the closest pcmo to the delo?

The tracker is heavily abused both will probably get 15w40delo apr-nov and some sort of mix in the winter. There is trop-artic here for 1.47/qt would that mix well with delo, 50/50 maybe?

While it is possible the dipstick is cold (it is on front of engine) and that would explain
the varnishing high on the stick.. The last time I checked the oil.. it was dry and had tar on the bottom. I'm sure the inside isnt honey colored

I was told by 3 "professionals" to run it overful with a qt of kerosene for 10min at idle then change it. I declined

. Figured if it was that crusty something would flake off and just clog
something else up.

Anyone know how easy it is to change the transmission filter/drop the pan on a 2001 hyundai accent? I am tempted to just siphon out as much as possible from the dipstick and freshen it up some.
Anyone in northeast ohio know the cheapest place for the "special" transmission fluid?
I'm in the akron/kent area, downtown cleveland isnt too far from my work 20miles or so. If it would save me 20$ I'd do it.
The local mitsu/hyundai dealer wants 7.95/qt for it.

Thanks for the suggestions.. problems with some of them..
no 10w30 diesel oil available nearby... it still
getting to 0 at night here sometimes...
No supertech filter available for either vehicle
(at least at walmarts near me)
I like the pure1 because it fits my filter
wrench lol.

I guess i'll see if the tracker has room
for a motorcraft 400s(or the puro equiv)
It will be really close but maybe.
The hyundai does have alot of room. probably
5".

I doubt either will put any money in their vehicle. I am just trying to do the cheap stuff
to fix them up abit.
heck its a battle trying to get her to change the
transmission fluid.. 80k on factory fill and she delivered papers for years (no longer does)

Thanks for the feedback.. I didnt think of the
pcv. Thats probably in the repair range lol.

Neither vehicle has had syn ever. I may put some in the hyundai after the rinse phase of auto-rx.
The tracker was leaking a qt a week or 2, due to bad filter. I wont be putting syn in that for sure.. it does have leaks also.

I will probably drain and refil the coolant..
probably at the next 2 oil changes or so.

Again, Thanks for the feedback.

It's possible since it sees very few cold start-ups and cold short trips, the real oil killers.
But you need to clean your engine up with the AutoRX first.
Maybe even a couple of times with a thin dino.
Don't use or mix in anything thicker than 5w30 during the cold months.
After you get your engine clean, you may put in a synthetic.
Start with 5-6K and then take it from there.

Are the hyundai and suzuki both auto trans? That's a good sign if those engines and trans can take that kind of abuse/neglect!
cheers.gif
Our rural paper lady uses taurus/sables. I swear she's got a new (used) one every year! Those transaxles dont take the beating.

Vad the manual does not even spec 5w30 for the hyundai engine. It isnt normally that cold here winter temps this year were 90% of the time 25-30degrees.
of course tonight its sitting at 3.2degrees.

I am cleaning the engine with auto-rx right now.
next oil change in 1458miles.. and counting.

So?

My Ford manual doesn't specify 0w30 either.
But this is what I choose to put in the crankase.
And it's 70-45 degrees around here.
The motor oils are continuously getting better.
We don't have to follow the outdated manuals.

Your from NE ohio right? follow Vad's advice. 5w30 in winter. and no way run any oil to 10K intervals...especially severe service, and especially if it is already sludged as much as it has been.
As for transmission, should have drain plug underneath, I dont think there is a filter in the transmission. And whatever you do, use only Mitsu - diamond/Hyundai spec lll fluid!!

Nice Al, How about I just take care of her new car
lol. I read all about the special ** transmission fluid.. I hate paying 6+ a qt for something that should be 3$ but hey its her paying for it lol.

I'll check for the drain plug but methinks thats too easy a solution. She isnt severe service anymore.. I dont think hers is sludged too bad really. At least compared to the tracker *shudder*. I may have over-reacted to the bad varnish on the dipstick.. That can be explained. I'm betting the a-rx will clean it right up. Does anyone know why the book does not spec a 5w30 oil for this engine?
It says 10w30,10w-40, 10w-50. In the maintence
manual.

Well its almost 2 months so I thought I would update..

The hyundai is cleaning up nicely but seems to have
a minor oil leak not sure from where yet.
The Auto-Rx cleaned the dipstick to like new except the bottom which is still like tar but getting better. I wiped it 2-3 times with a shop towel and its definitely doing some cleaning.

I did the transmission fluid change only got 3qts out was expecting it to drain 5 I guess next time I cant use the ramps.. or maybe ill jackup the back end too somehow. I'll probably do this again on the next oil change..

Currently 800mi into the rinse. Overall I'm very Impressed with Auto-rx it cleans really slow
but thats what you need so you dont plug stuff up.

Now the Tracker ugh. No oversized filters fit
there is about 1/2-3/4" clearance but you just cant get the bigger filter on.. and if you could
I would worry about it banging on the support.
Its running really crappy and just got sent
off to the mechanic as it wont pass emmissions testing. I drained its oil out at 3000mi(26days)
and it came out black but no chunks this time.
I'll probably just use Supertech High Mileage (6.26/5qt) in
both and change them frequently as I dont think
either is gonna make it another 20000 miles.

Does anyone know how hard it is to do the timing
belt on the hyundai.. any special tools needed?
Estimated cost? (can only dealers do it or anyone?)
With the TLC the hyundai may go for a long time.
Esp since I am actually doing the maintence on it.
however the 80k on stock transmission fluid didnt
help. Nor did the malfunctioning transmission electronics that are keeping the OD from engaging
and the torque converter from locking.
