Our Murray 17.5 B&S ride on mower leaks gas from a solenoid on the bottom of the float bowl.
I gave up years ago trying to 'reliabaly' prevent it from leaking.
I decided to fit a fuel shut off valve.

This was the only type available locally

So far I have gone through 3 of them, 2 leaked in the OFF position, 1 leaked in the ON

Any ideas?

I've really had no trouble with any I've bought over the years. The ball types are great, but after adding the barbed 1/4", it may be too long to be a tidy fit in some applications. I have a couple of the Briggs and they've been fine and cheaper at Northern and some others.

Thanks guys, I will order one of the aviation type, I hope it fits withour fouling the engine cover.

Strange I have had such bad luck with the B&S valves?
I really consider this to be a safety issue, both the solenoid valve and the fuel turn off leaking! and it seems I'm not the only one that has had this problem.

I never had a problem with them. Could somebody cut a failed one open to see what's inside?

I just recently learned there is an arrow on them that is supposed to point towards the carburetor. I always assumed they were just a normal plug valve and direction wouldn't matter, but maybe they preferentially seal in one direction only? (Thus the arrow?)

Stupid fuel shut-off valve is acting up on my 1yr old 28" Ariens Snow-Tek, LCT engine. Fueled it up to use it for the first time of the season and the shut-off valve was very stiff to rotate. As gentile as possible I worked it open/close/open/close until it opened.. and then fuel started running out of the engine cowling.. Ugh.

It looks like a lot has to come apart to get to the stupid thing. The only thing you can get at from the outside is the twisty knob for the valve.

Luckily.. it seems to have stopped leaking (when open) and it twists OK now.

FWIW, this LCT Ariens engine is the same one used on the orange Ariens machines.
