Not sure entirely, Wix does seem to favor the combo for filters to the masses, yet on clones of certain still up to date filters (like the Motorcraft FL-910s and FL-400s, Silver 31348 and 31516) they use a Motorcraft style thread end bypass. So OEM style seems to have something to do with it at least in part.
There are not many if any current vehicles that actually spec an FL1A (I don't think Ford has produced a vehicle that spec'd it since the 90's) so the equivalent there gets the combo valve.
I have found the combo valve filters to perform great in actual use, but I have still come to favor the one pictured here.
