Ok I still have 5 qts of this oil that needs to be used or tossed.
It is about 8 years old. I am thinking of throwing it in the 4 runner that gets 6mo/5k mile services on the next oil change in March. This is the sodium detergent version so I won't use it in the Tacoma. But the 1gr fe ( in the 2018 4 runner)was around when I bought this. It gets a lot more shopping and errand duty than my Tacoma so I do t mind the 5w20. But if it seems too risky I will just run 0w40!

So, should I run this?..if so what should I use as the 6th quart for the oil change since I only have 5 sealed quarts on hand.

Anything your heart desires, honestly.

It doesn't even have to be synthetic.

Run it

Nice the oil change takes 6

I think Napa has MaxLife full syn on sale in quarts for $5.29. It's not a great deal, but I' grab some 5W-20 and call it a day...

Read the manual on your Toyota. It will specify the oil type. It will likely say something like use API SL or later in which case SM is fine. If it says to use SN or later, then don't use that SM oil.

Bottom line... read the manual it tells you what oil to use. As for this oil being 8 years old, I doubt that matters. It's shelf stable and sealed.

Well, technically page 465 specifies ILSAC GF-5 "Recommended viscosity: SAE 0W-20"

And for Puerto Rico, Toyota gives the blessing for API SL, SM, or SN -- or "ILSAC multigrade engine oil"

I just poured 5 qts of 10w30 SL into my Volvo. Of course, that the correct oil per the handbook, but who knows how old it is. My friend got it from cleaning out his late fathers garage. I put in dino 10w30 SN for the 6th qt. If my engine blows up, I'n sure it will have more to do with the 259,000 miles it's traveled and less to do with the 20 year old oil in it.
