My Winter Brew

Frost heaves, heck, they're MINOR compared to the quantity of potholes that will arise. Might need new struts all 'way round too.

Cannot give an oil recommendation based on brain overload of information today, but the Wix filter recommendation is a winner in my book.

I've just been checking around about the PureOne recently, and the only negative that I have seen mentioned is that the there might be too many pleats to allow full flow of the oil once the filter starts getting loaded up with contaminents. On the other side of the coin, I've also read that the way the bypass valves are set, it would take so much junk to block it for the bypass to trip, that it really doesn't matter in today's engines.

I've used both, along with AC-Delco, Motorcraft, K & N (just the oil, not the air filters), and Mobil 1 are my usual batch of filter choices.

Either one is a great filter in my book, I just mention Wix because they usually have much better vehicle coverage in their line.

I've too read about the blockage problem, however I figure that with the oil I run and the OCI I use, (3,000 Miles or less) that I dont allow enough time for the filter to begin full of debris.

Im going to probably swap out the M1 0-40 for Castrol 0w-30 however I probably WONT be able to find green. I'll also keep my eye out for SLX Longtec in 0w-30.

Any other winter oil recommendations.

We live 90 miles north of you. Most winters, you won't have more than a few days below 15 degrees. Why not consider a good 5w30, especially with the shorter change intervals? If your engine is in good condition, why would you need any additives? I use LC, seems to work well, running Pennz dino 5W-20 in our Honda.

BTW: the 0w-40 is the only thing in my crank case currently, no VSOT.

Recommendations then for a better winter time oil?

I'd stay with a 5w30. Mobil's fine if you want a synthetic. German Castrol's better probably. I'm also in SE Pa. I like the WIX better than PureOne's the Pure one's scare me with the flimsy construction. Carquest B4620 works for the Spec. Right now I am using Havoline 5w30 with a Quart of Redline in my Sentra SE. I've had great oil analysis with that.

Al! Whats up man? Im part of b15sentra.net, you know me as Engmus there.

I know I wont be able to find GC Syntec in 0w-30 german made (green). So what about the GC Syntec in Gold?
