I consider myself as somewhat of a gearhead and I really like to take care of my vehicles. I currently have:
1997 Toyota 4runner 128000 miles
2002 Honda Civic 143000 miles
2004 Harley Heritage 23000 miles
2007 BMW R1200gs Adventure 13000 miles

I also own an outboard engine(4stroke), lawn tractor, as well as various mowers, chain saws, weed whackers, blowers, etc.

I have never done a UOA and I have never had an oil related engine failure in 30+ years of driving/riding which amounts to well over a million miles. I used to adhere to the 3000 mile mantra but now just do 5000 OCI's with dino. I do use Mobil 1 in the motorcycles because they are air cooled and I want the perceived added high temp protection in Florida summers.

Finally, I always thought that I had a severe anal obsession with engine lubrication until I found BITOG, now I realize that I only had a mild case.

Oh, I forgot this part.

I contend that anyone with a newer car will be fine with 5000 mile dino OCI's and that in most cases the engine will outlive the body, transmission, and the owners desire to drive an out-of-date car well before the engine fails.

Unless you get lucky with some manufacturer's "sludge prone" masterpiece.

Good point. Too bad the dealers don't paste "sludge prone" across the windshields!
