Friday night's movie night in my house, me and the children taking it in turns to play a movie that we want to share with each other, wife reading a book.

Last night was mine, and given that it's nearly a year since we were in Tombstone, and that it's freezing here this winter, I put on Tombstone.

Daughter wasn't really interested (son wants to go back), and gets a bit agitated, wanting water, toilet etc.

Anyway, the earp brothers were playing pool, and daughter paused for a wee break.

Son (10) says that he thinks he's worked out how pool works.

You hit the ball, which makes it move and become electric. It hits another ball, which makes the other ball electric, and not being electric anymore, the first ball stops...Just like those balls in the frame on strings that you can buy.

I was stoked at his insight, and how he takes his knowledge and applies it to his (very keen) observations.

Well... Apple has not fallen far from the tree I would say

That's a cool deal man

You're lucky to have such a son.

exactly (on both counts)

Speaking as a father myself, it's satisfying in a way that's hard to describe when your progeny come up with a spark of insight like this.

It's fun listening to kids explain thing and answer questions. My 10 year old granddaughter was with a group of friends when asked what they wanted to be when they grew up. Answers ranged from teacher to airline pilot to an engineer just like my dad. My granddaughter that has been around the hospital with me a lot during my struggle with cancer answered, a pediatric nephrologist specializing in chronic disease. That got a lot of blank stares from the adults.
