I started out with Havoline SAE30 when it was made by Texaco. I switched brands after it disappeared in the eighties. Castrol, Mobil 1 mostly. Started using Valvoline in this millennium.

Just got my rebate from Valvoline so a month turnaround and a good deal on their oils right now.

Boycott rebates and they will stop. That's the only way to end the madness and get instant relief at the cash register for that oil purchase.

+1000. Creating additional hazardous wast (used oil) thinking that the engine will last longer is a false narrative. Let's be honest, most of us don't drive our cars past 200k (although all of mine are past that mileage.). Would we change brakes at 50%, or buy new tires when they are half worn? NO. Same should be with automotive fluids. Use what you take in this world, don't waste it.

As mentioned above, oils today are much better than oils of the past. Any modern SN/SN+ changed on a regular basis will not have an oil related issue.

When I joined here, SM was just being introduced, with many new vehicles still only recommending SH or better oils.
German Castrol (the Green Elixer) was all the rage here.
I was primarily a VWB user when I came here, no real reason in particular, maybe marketing? Over time, I just starting finding that oil deals were more important than particular brand.

Although I have quite a stash to go through, if I ever need to go buy some oil full price, Supertech oil (even their conventional) would be on the top of my list. When I got my motorcycle, I had no oil for it, so I bought a jug of Supertech 15w-40. I have since obtained a stash of cheap 15w-40 oil (Peak Syn Blend and Rotella T6), but again, was not buying based on any specific formulation or brand.

*I believe that is a blind , generalized statement to make - Hyundai GDI engines thrash synthetic oil so bad that by 5K miles the oil is black ! A Blackstone report may indicate a slight distance increase is possible , but never anything like 10K + mile OCI's on a Hyundai GDI engine , if you did the engine would not last and your warranty would be toast .

Eneos Sustina is a very sweet oil. Those that have used it will never forget. It really smells good. I'm more picky about specifications than "my motor oil tastes".

Boycott getting money given to you? Who in their right mind would do that??

I just buy what's on sale without rebates. Pennzoil is still my favorite. I'm just not going to pay extra for something which does not matter.

Either a "on sale" syn (like NAPA for $3/qt.) run 10K miles with a NG filter, OR
cheap conventional (like ST) for 5K miles, with filter still staying on for 10K.

Ive bought my own motor oil for about as long as Ive been driving, so 14 years now. Didnt manage to get my license until I was 18 due to some circumstances around that time in my life. Anyway, I seem to have always had a thing for Valvoline. Not sure why, but it was always my go to then, and has been since. Ive tried a few different ones in between. Quaker State, Mobil, and maybe another one or two that I cant think of right now, but Ive always ended up going back to Valvoline in one flavor or another. Had my father do the change for me until I just recently learned how to do it myself and probably will do it myself from now on until I cant for one reason or another. I like the idea of knowing exactly what is going into my vehicle and how much.

He could move here. As you're well aware, rebates boycott Canada, rather than the other way around.

Well, it is getting a little better.

We definitely don't see many oil rebates here, I can't recall any for Mobil 1 at all, and the Pennzoil one that's going on this year is the only one I can remember. Hopefully that changes in the future.

i have been a oil nut for years. i just recently started using 5w30 coastal gf5 in my corvette because thats the oil that quieted down my valvetrain the most. i buy it in bulk for when i offer cheap oil changes at my shop.(1.30/qt.) im going to do a voa soon.

Doesn't valvoline rebate apply to Canada? Have to enter your email to get it at the Team Valvoline site, then you can get various amount back based on which product you buy.

Decades ago there used to be big differences in motor oils, not any more, more stringent API testing, more accurate API testig (aka computers) and the huge consolidation of the oil manufacturers (much like the electronic industry) they all use a handful of companies to produce the additive packages that produce products that meet the API requirements..

It no longer matters how much or how little you pay for oil, if it has the API on the bottle for what your vehicle requires there is no better oil at any price, except the marketing of companies who get people to pay more for oil that is no better, as there is NEVER any proof, just words.. .
