Great place for winter/rainy day shooting. Not too many idiots at any given moment. I've been a member for coming up on a year. Was considering upgrading my membership but something occurred a couple trips back that I didn't mention earlier.

I found out in a demeaning manner about steel bullets during an ammo search at the check-in counter. They asked what kind of ammo (standard question). I said I have a variety....and I listed off the brands I was packing and as soon as I said S&B, they went on full Barney Fife mode. I had to pull out all my ammo....they rudely ripped open the boxes and checked the bullets with a magnet. Well the .357SIG and 45ACP were fine, but my *S&B .38 Special copper FMJ, sure as poop stuck firmly to the magnet. They said I couldn't shoot it so I took it back to the car and had to buy some Blazer FMJ, brass, from them if I wanted to shoot my revolvers. It was $19, so I wasn't super [censored] about that. But I did tell the guys to calm down on the Gestapo routine and I don't like my ammo boxes torn. I pay for this????

*I have 6 boxes of S&B .38 Special at home. 4 boxes have magic magnetic bullets, 2 boxes don't. Go figure.

I know the rules so I'm not complaining about the prohibition on steel bullets (and cases). The whole thing was kind of embarrassing. The one guy could tell I was [censored] and said "Don't get mad at ME". I told him I was not exactly mad at him, just a little cranky about the behavior of the crew and didn't like the S&B surprise.
 
Sure, they have a job to do, but it can't be good for the owner's business for them to do that job rudely.

I'd mention it to the owner of the range. You'd be doing him a favor.

For outdoors, I just got my acceptance letter to a private club. Very cool. My orientation is July 9. Wahoo!!! But for indoor ranges, this place is indeed the best. Trust me. The other indoor places in the area, frankly the clientele scares me. I don't like being flagged every trip!!

The owner is a she. I will do that.
 
I think a lot of businesses could use more customer service training. Seems most employees are either in your face saying can I help you?..........when you don't need help. But whenever you do need help you feel like no one works there.....

Or people are just rude. Come on folks have some tact......
 
Major reason why I don't go to ranges period. Give me some open land and clear enough to shoot the distances I want and I'm good to go.

If the closest person is 100 yards to the side of me its over crowded.

It was nice this AM since it had not gotten hot yet, overcast with the slight breeze.

Figured out my 9mm key-holing issues with a new load so all is good.

Sounds like a bunch of idiots and crooks trying to use any way they can to sell their own product.

We had an indoor range up here where I used to go from time to time. The owner was... I don't know a word that wouldn't get censored, but that's what he was. Little short guy that thought he was some kind of mixture of Judge Dredd, Rambo, and an MMA fighter. The compensation factor was ridiculous, he was a caricature. Sure enough, he was doing some crooked reselling of stolen guns that he was buying from one of our illustrious police officers in the area who was taking them from the evidence room. ATF shut him down and I think he's on house arrest for the next ten years (no idea what happened to the cop, probably a week of administrative leave) but the place got sold to some of his former employees who were no better.

Anyway, I switched to an outdoor range that is way cheaper and a little longer distance from home. Never looked back. They have a cover over the benches so unless it's really a storm you can shoot in the rain without any problems.

I wouldn't say that.

On Friday, they didn't even ask about my ammo.

Yes, West Coast Armory. All in all, not a bad place. I'm going to challenge them. The core IS lead. The jacket is a CuZn 10%, Fe 90% ALLOY.

From the outside, with a magnet, how would they know the difference between a tiny amount of Fe in the jacket and a Fe core?

They don't. I plead my case this AM. The people at the front are totally ignorant. When I started talking alloys their eyes glazed over faster than a sulfur methane release in a school bus. But in the end they told me they would speak with the owner. They are totally freaked about steel fragments ricocheting.
 
Find another range.

Reasons like this are why I spend good money to belong to a private club. I shoot to relax, I don't want range Nazi's hovering over me, or idiots shooting next to me.

I have been known to tell many an over zealous range officers to stop hovering, I guess they see young guys with nice guns, and depending on the day and what I drag out sometimes modern stuff and assume were going to do something stupid.

If you drag out some kind of hunting rifle or a Mosin/k98 they don't give you a second glance. But an AR, AK, and SCAR OMG they are on your butt. One range around me I haven't been to in awhile is really bad and one officer gets his undies in a wad if you don't count to 3 between each shot, even though its not really a range rule, its his rule.

One day when I get a full auto toy are two, I'm going to head over there and see if he will kick me out. I'd love to see the look on his face as I link up a couple belts on an MG42 and let 200 rounds rip down range. LOL!

You're right.

Ricochet, damage to or penetration of the traps, and sparks are the concerns with steel bullets. The only easy way for them to check for steel or the typical armor piercing cores is to use a magnet.
 
Did you not see the post about the traps being sand heaps. Pretty hard to ricochet off or tear up. Also, what are "typical armor piercing cores?" Anybody I know that still has armor piercing stuff sure isn't taking it to the range.
