REMOVAL
Disconnect negative battery cable.
Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove right front wheel.
Remove the right splash shield.
Remove accessory drive belts.
Remove crankshaft damper
Remove the lower torque strut
Disconnect exhaust system from manifold.
Disconnect A/C pressure switch at rear of compressor housing.
Lower vehicle and support engine with a jack.
Discharge A/C system and disconnect A/C lines at coupling block
Remove upper torque strut
Remove screw attaching ground strap to strut bracket.
Remove torque strut bracket from strut tower.
Remove upper radiator support crossmember
Remove power steering pump and bracket. Set pump aside. Do not disconnect lines from pump.
With engine properly supported, remove right engine mount through bolt.
Raise engine with jack until engine support bracket bolts are accessible.
Remove support bracket bolts.
Remove support bracket.
Remove upper timing belt cover fasteners and remove cover.
Remove lower timing belt cover fasteners and remove cover
CAUTION: When aligning crankshaft and camshaft timing marks always rotate engine from crankshaft. Camshaft should not be rotated after timing belt is removed. Damage to valve components may occur. Always align timing marks before removing timing belt.
Before the removal of the timing belt, rotate crankshaft until the TDC mark on oil pump housing aligns with the TDC mark on crankshaft sprocket (trailing edge of sprocket tooth)
NOTE: The crankshaft sprocket TDC mark is located on the trailing edge of the sprocket tooth. Failure to align trailing edge of sprocket tooth to TDC mark on oil pump housing will cause the camshaft timing marks to be misaligned.
Install 6 mm Allen wrench into belt tensioner. Before rotating the tensioner, insert the long end of a 1/8” or 3 mm Allen wrench into the pin hole on the front of the tensioner .
While rotating the tensioner counterclockwise, push in lightly on the 1/8” or 3 mm Allen wrench, until it slides into the locking hole.
Remove timing belt. CAUTION: If timing belt was damaged due to incorrect tracking (alignment), the belt tensioner assembly must be replaced

INSTALLATION

Set crankshaft sprocket to TDC by aligning the sprocket with the arrow on the oil pump housing.
Set camshafts timing marks so that the exhaust camshaft sprocket is a 1/2 notch below the intake camshaft sprocket
CAUTION: Ensure that the arrows on both camshaft sprockets are facing up.
Install timing belt. Starting at the crankshaft, go around the water pump sprocket, idler pulley, camshaft sprockets and then around the tensioner
Move the exhaust camshaft sprocket counterclockwise to align marks and take up belt slack. NOTE: A new tensioner is held in the wound position by a pull pin.
Remove the pull pin or Allen wrench from the belt tensioner.
Once the timing belt has been installed and tensioner released, rotate the crankshaft two (2) complete revolutions. Verify that the TDC marks on crankshaft and timing marks on the camshafts are aligned as shown in .
Install lower timing belt cover and tighten fasteners to 9 N·m (80 in. lbs.
Install upper timing belt cover and tighten fasteners to 9 N·m (80 in. lbs.
Install right engine support bracket. Ensure the power steering pump is properly located in mounting location on bracket. Tighten mount bracket bolts to 61 N·m (45 ft. lbs.)
Lower engine into mounting position and install right engine mount through bolt. Tighten bolt to 118 N·m (87 ft. lbs.).
Install power steering pump and bracket.
Install upper radiator support crossmember
Install torque strut bracket to strut tower.
Connect ground strap to bracket.
Install upper torque strut
Connect A/C lines. Evacuate and recharge A/C system
Raise vehicle.
Connect exhaust system to manifold.
Connect A/C pressure switch connector.
Install crankshaft damper
Install accessory drive belts
Install lower torque strut
Perform torque strut adjustment procedure
Install right splash shield.
Install right front wheel.
Connect negative cable to battery.

Don't forget that you have about 1.5 inches to work in.

+1

My brother in law bought a 05 PT 8 months ago in Morehead Kentucky [where he lives] for 8500 bucks...It had 60K miles on it...It was a one owner in excellent condition...I was totally against it...So far he put on 15K miles on it with no issues.

As long as your girlfriend is happy with it thats all that matters...Whatever floats your boat.

The KBB private-party value of said vehicle, in typical spec, is less than $3600. And that's if it's in "excellent" condition.

Sorry, bro...
you must be using a computer on a different internet. i just put a 2001 pt cruiser in kbb and got $6250 in excellent condition retail, and 5000 grand private party!

well this is what happens when someones grandma decides to buy a brand new car gets sticker shock and decides 7k was all she would spend i guess since we didnt buy it and the belt doesnt have to be replaced right away we can kinda save up and get it done I really dont have the time to do it myself. As for my woman she absolutly loves it she didnt involve me because I was ticked that her grandma cheaped out alittle (I guess I just kinda got to appreciate what she did get its better that her 80' 300 sd that was rusting out bad). lol now i have to find a way to tell her that bob as she calls us said this needs to be done soon.thanks for the info guys even the bad.

I just got $4265 as a private party, excellent condition quote. Must be differences in zip code? I never pay attention to the "retail" price from KBB, as that tends to be an overly inflated dealer price.

Here is what my computron & internets said for a private party sale (which this was, SRV is irrelevant):

If you're getting values over a grand what I am, I have a few used cars to sell you.

i just ran it again on kbb and this time i came up with 7200 retail and 5700 private party.

i beleive it depends on zip code and options! Mike

Unfortunately the car takes forever to go 100 mph.

It's better than being unreliable. Actually, I never really found the 2.4 was that bad. There are definitely slower cars out there. Its 150hp/150tq..

Using 48201 as the zip code (Detroit) from Edmunds TMV (True Market Value) for a car in clean condition:

Dealer Trade-in: $3,344
Private Party: $4,159
Dealer Retail: $5,038

It won't win any races, but these aren't bad cars. They are very versatile, and have a very low ownership cost. Styling is subjective and as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If the old lady is happy, thats all that matters!

My GF(now wife) didn't wait for me to get out of work 4 years ago and she went with her father to Nissan 46 in NJ. They both bought Altimas(03 and 05) and were ripped off. I think each one was about 18k, plus about 4k down on one and 10k on the other. Blue Book, Galvs and others weren't even close to the premium this dealership charged. Both cars had a lot of issues, and after a transmission sensor went and her shocks were shot(at 30k) she wanted to get rid of the car as it was having other issues(CEL). Tried to trade it and turns out the car was in 3, THREE accidents!. She said she checked it, but didn't check her self(dealer gave her the document). Turn's out it was a falsified AutoCheck report because I ran both a Carfax and Autocheck after the dealer we tried to trade it into told us and gave us a report. It was in an accident a few years before it was traded in to Nissan 46.

I finally got rid of the car and put her in a 03 Grand Am Ram Air GT as the GA was her first car and she liked it. I just wish she would have waited, she would have been in a better car, for much less.

They could do a lot worse than a used PT. THey are simple cars and many find them versatile. I love my 03 GT stick.

I just picked up a 06 PT GT stick COnvertible with 41K miles for 10K$
Has every option, awesome car. Drove it on a trip with wife this weekend and got 27.5 MPG. Not too shabby for 3400 lb brick :)

Now to get a stage 1 computer and 3" exhaust and up the boost.
