Bride's new ride - Volvo XC60 T8 PHEV

I can’t comment on how well-made the new ones are, though the fit and finish, the materials, all seem top notch. Certainly the driving experience was very nice, as well.

This is totally true. When my wife got in the first one we drove and closed the door, she asked "did you hear that?" "That sounds solid - like quality." I about fell out of the car with her comment, but I couldn't agree more. It felt solid. Looking around the car in more details, pieces that are normally stamped are cast in this car, the finish of pieces unseen is above average almost over the top at times. Being an engineer...just looking at the components, there is a quality that I would even suggest beats BMW, and Merc. Nothing squeeks, there are no clunks or bumps...everything is solid, controls click or engage sharp and smooth. I'm impressed. No, it doesn't have the character of the Alfa...nor the pure sportiness of the M-sport BMW, but it feels quality. In the reviews, the biggest dig is the infotainment, and my bride and I both love it - it is like an Andriod phone, super simple and intuitive to use. I don't get how modern folks with a smartphone think it is complex. I had it figured out in the first mile or two of our test drive (she drove first = her car).

We were over $10k below your range with the discounts we found. They also offered us within $3k of what we bought the Kia for to begin with, so we drove it ~6K miles for $0.50 a mile...only adding gas and one oil change (which was supposed to be free, but they wouldn't change it as early as I wanted).
With savings like that, it would be foolish not to purchase the Volvo!
Kudos on that deal!

I heard that Tesla recorded those doors and put it in the “dash top” for a quality door closing sound …

I looked at several Volvo cars and SUVs a couple years ago. They were very nice rides. Hope you and your wife enjoy this one. Right or wrong, I couldn’t shake their connection with China.

The Chinese ownership bothers me, but the cars do look nice. IIRC, @Ws6 owned one briefly (the EV)?
At least they aren't made in China.
I wonder if they say something similar about Tesla in China?

Since they don't have anything remotely close to high 30's/low 40's price. I haven't considered them seriously.

Even if I had disposable funds allowing a 65k car purchase I'd likely add 25k to a retirement account at my point in life.

Not sure about now, but S60 Inscription (slightly longer wheelbase than S60) in 2017 or so were made in China and imported to USA. The S60 at the time was made in Ghent, Belgium.

When I checked the car we are talking about in this thread it seemed the ones imported to USA were made in Sweden.
(its possible my info was wrong)

Oh, the effect might not be that big at the start, just like the rulers in 1955 weren't too overbearing...then came the Cultural Revolution. Or Hong Kong, 15 years....of some flexibility, then they brought in the hammers and bulldozers(figuratively) to flex their might.

Volvos are about safety...Chinese are about cutting safety....

I’m a big Volvo fan… owned 3 p2s. The XC60 IMO is the most attractive suv in its class. I’d be happy with the little base power plant.

I have been a bit nervous with the dash electronics in the newer versions, as some folks reported a few issues early on in this generation. Google sleuthing suggests the majority of the complaints were 2022 and prior. Hopefully it’s worked out by now. Let us know how yours does.

One of these could absolutely be in my plan at some point, depending on timing.

You aren’t wrong.
Many are made in Sweden and Belgium. S60 (since August 2018) and EX90 are made in South Carolina.

I am not sure if any Chinese Volvos are imported here presently, but they have in the past.

What if you could do both?

What if your investment goals were already met?

I mean, let’s say you have just put $75,000 in your retirement portfolio.

Would you be OK with buying a $75,000 car then?

Funny, I saw lots of "made in China" marked parts in my C40 P8 Ultimate.

I'm not concerned with our retirement...we should have no issues maintaining our standard of living for the remainder of our lives, and my bride and I are both of the personality that we will work in some way or another until we physically can't any longer. If I "quit my day job" I would go crazy until I found something else to do. We had no issues buying this car sans loan...and the Kia we traded in was paid for in cash when we got it.
