Hey guys, the 4.3 in my silverado has developed a ticking sound, a little louder on passenger side, of the engine. Sounds like lifters or valves. Its not loud. Cant hear in the truck. Just enough to be annoying to me when i listen. Always have done 3K mile oci's and used mostly gtx. The tcking has gotten a little louder, so i changed the gtx out and put in Mobil 1 5w30 w/ napa gold. anybody else have anoying ticking sounds from their chevys? Should I just ignore it?

I should say the last oci of about 2500 miles, i used a ac delco filter, non ecore, pf47. Thats when the ticking started..
Ticking isn't always the oil's fault...if it were the filter, it would go away a few seconds after start-up...More likely is a sticking/collapsed lifter or just plain too much valve clearance. I would check/adjust the valve clearance...it's a simple task...like 3/4 of a SBC...an exhaust manifold leak can often make a ticking sound...so check those too...
Change the filter ASAP.

Was the ticking louder with the GTX or were you saying it'd gotten louder/more pronounced when you did your oil change with M1?
I started noticing the ticking so i wanted to try M1 to see if it would help. I just put some mmo in tonight and it seems a bit quieter already. Maybe it will go away

When m1 was still the sm spec every engine I used it in made more top end noise,now that the sn spec is out in my experience with M1 that is no longer the case.
As far as the tick goes I'm not sure that thinning it with mmo would help however I doubt it will hurt anything. Remember that adding mmo reduces the tbn,so you may want to shorten the oci a bit however M1 is a 10000 mile oil in most engines so even with the mmo it should easily do a 5000-7000 mile interval.
Please post any other experiences and if the mmo helps the tick.

Just spitballing though. It could be a few different things and I'm interested in knowing how this turns out for you.
I'd be monitoring the oil colour via the dipstick every couple hundred miles,just to see how quickly the oil darken which may be indicative of how dirty the engine may be.

I used a 1/3 quart in gas and a 1/3 in the oil. well see what happens, ill keep posting
Here I am just by chance I found this thread. How can I be of service???? Generally Valvoline conventional solves the ticking sounds. But I can help if I know what is question.

Oh wait I got it change the filter after the oil trail . This way if you do it one at a time you should figure out the problem. Filter or oil or lifters I guess. Not to mention making the radio louder which is 100% always a cure.

Did you check the exhaust manifolds? When the bolts break you will hear a ticking.That would explain hearing it more on one side or the other.

If you confirm that it is a valve/lifter issue causing the ticking, try an oil with a high level of Boron. Completely unscientific, but I've noticed that most of the claims of an oil making an engine quieter have an oil with high Boron as the "cure".

From the PQIA testing, I've noticed that all of the C-P lineup uses high Boron. In the most recent synthetic testing, the Mobil Super Syn and the Formula Shell were standouts. The Super Tech Synthetic also has a good amount.
I've noticed high boron oils tend to run quiet too.
Peak, Trop Artic, Motorcraft, Quaker State Conventional, STP (the motor oil) all have whopper doses of boron, over 200 ppm many around 250 ppm.

I once had a MC 820-s filter go bad on me... dry starts constantly.
Changed it to another one and presto, no problems
