Have lobes that show similar wear pattern on my 98 Sable cam with just over 200,000 miles. Surprised me but I didn't own the car it's first 10 years. No matter as there is a brand new engine waiting to be assembled for it.
When my wife gets bored of her's, I'll call you.I'll probably try to look into buying another 06-07 with lower mileage from a non-rust state if this one dies.
might have made it to 700,000 with better oilLooks like a good case for the use of higher viscosity oils.
Unless it could have avoided the lobe wear and oil consumptionSee all you have to do is change your oil with a major store bought brand and you will be fine...No H igh P riced L iquid needed....
Indeed, if there's a materials issue with the camshafts, it's unlikely a different oil would have made a difference. My above comment is a bit tongue-in-cheek based on a recent interaction on this same subject.Very impressive. I would run it until it starts misfiring and then scrap it.
In regards to oil choice, it would likely make little to no difference IMO.
I think I remember when you first bought it and posted about it. Did you buy it from a Honda dealer if I remember correctly? Surprised they weren't asking more since the exterior looked so good.I paid $2700 for it 8 years ago. I think I got my money's worth.
Would you know the approximate oil change interval the car had for those 667K+ miles and what brand/type/viscosity oil was used.I attempted to change the valve cover gasket on my long-leaking high-mileage Accord yesterday, but one of the nuts holding the valve cover on was stripped and would not come off. I decided to take it in to the dealer to have them do it, and adjust the valves while it was there. I asked them to take some photos while the cover was off, and here is what they sent me. In the 95k miles I've owned the car, I haven't adjusted the valves or had the valve cover off. I am not sure if the valves were ever adjusted before. The timing chain is original, as far as I know. The previous owner put 571k miles on the vehicle, bringing it to the dealer about once a month for an oil change (every 5-7k miles). It burned a lot of oil when I got it, and I suspect it may have been run low on oil a few times based on the large wear scars on the cam lobes. It still runs well, but the wear on the lobes tells me it may not last a lot longer. Hopefully I can get a few more years out of it, as the body is too rusty to justify replacing the engine. They may have already been heavily scarred before I got it, as I never run it low on oil... but who knows at this mileage. It does look exceptionally clean otherwise, probably due to the constant inflow of fresh oil every 1000 miles or so. Enjoy!

it’s in his post. previous owner did 5-7k intervals at the honda dealership. Honda spec’s 5w-20 for these cars and a filter change every 2 OCI’s.Would you know the approximate oil change interval the car had for those 667K+ miles and what brand/type/viscosity oil was used.
That's the first question that comes to mind for me when I see a high mileage vehicle like the one you have.
You are taking over half a million miles on that car...most other cars are already in the junkyard...Unless it could have avoided the lobe wear and oil consumption![]()
Yep, I know. Remember those discussions about at what point it might make a difference to run a higher quality oil? IE, how many miles would you need to accrue for it to become relevant? Well, that dovetails with this discussion. You are taking over half a million miles on that car...most other cars are already in the junkyard...
