I attempted to change the valve cover gasket on my long-leaking high-mileage Accord yesterday, but one of the nuts holding the valve cover on was stripped and would not come off. I decided to take it in to the dealer to have them do it, and adjust the valves while it was there. I asked them to take some photos while the cover was off, and here is what they sent me. In the 95k miles I've owned the car, I haven't adjusted the valves or had the valve cover off. I am not sure if the valves were ever adjusted before. The timing chain is original, as far as I know. The previous owner put 571k miles on the vehicle, bringing it to the dealer about once a month for an oil change (every 5-7k miles). It burned a lot of oil when I got it, and I suspect it may have been run low on oil a few times based on the large wear scars on the cam lobes. It still runs well, but the wear on the lobes tells me it may not last a lot longer. Hopefully I can get a few more years out of it, as the body is too rusty to justify replacing the engine. They may have already been heavily scarred before I got it, as I never run it low on oil... but who knows at this mileage. It does look exceptionally clean otherwise, probably due to the constant inflow of fresh oil every 1000 miles or so. Enjoy!

666k on the clock? explains why the lobes look so evil.

TBH, they look better than the K24 that my 03 CRV has with but 180k.

You bought a car with over 500k on it? and are running it? I am quite impressed. Run it until it dies, and apparently, you have a long time left to go.

How much would camshafts be for that engine ?
The dealer quoted me ~$2000. Buying a used engine would probably be more cost effective since I'm not sure how to replace the cams myself. Most K24s tend to burn oil after 100-150k, though. The entire engine could really use a rebuild as it's quite tired with stuck rings and blowby. I'm just gonna send it. It's my winter beater and if it dies, it isn't my only form of transportation. Love the car, but it's showing its age and not really worth dumping a bunch of money into. I'll probably try to look into buying another 06-07 with lower mileage from a non-rust state if this one dies.

Nice!

Honestly, I haven’t really seen a rusty Accord at that age. My neighbor on the next block has an 07 with 189k, and it still looks pretty good!

See all you have to do is change your oil with a major store bought brand and you will be fine...No H igh P riced L iquid needed....

Did they send pictures of the cam rocker arms/followers? With this much damage on the cam lobes I wonder if the rollers have seized.

If it was mine I would try to find some 2nd hand camshafts and rocket arms, swap them out and send it. I would not drive the car with these heavily pitted cams, though.
