Musk Says Tesla ‘Dug Our Own Grave’ With The Cybertruck

I seriously doubt that Tesla will lose $40k on each Cybertruck. I doubt they will lose anything. We'll know when the financials are released over a couple of quarters. If they were projected to lose that much I suspect Elon would just cancel the project.

Does it live up to expectations ? Sort of. Undoubtedly there will be revisions and improvements over time. The ramp up is expected to produce a 250,000 per year run rate by 2025. They have pre-orders for something like 1.3 million. Let's see how many are cancelled by about June of 2024. However if they manage to sell 250,000 a year at a profit I would still consider that a success considering how unorthodox the Cybertruck is.

Regarding Elon's supposedly anti-Semitic comment; I read the original story and what he tweeted about 5 or 6 times. I'm a pretty astute guy and still couldn't figure out exactly what it was all about. What I did gather from the whole hubbub is that there are a great many people in both the media and general public that are both predisposed to being offended about pretty much everything and anything these days. And it is a matter of seconds until some media source prints a sensationalist headline and it becomes "common knowledge" and accepted as truth/facts. A lot of people just want to be offended and want to pile on against those that they have a reason to dislike.

We can see it right here when members are now calling Musk a "neo Nazi" Really ? Wow.

The Cybertruck, like any new major new product undertaking, will take years to achieve profitability. And the Cybertruck is certainly a bold moce, and that's putting it nice... Depending on customer acceptance and demand, mfg capacity and COGS, it may never. Ask GM, Ford or just about any car maker about the difficulties of building and selling EVs. Heck, a lot of vehicles are flops.

Personally, I fail to see the Cybertruck use case beyond lifestyle. Of course a lot of vehicles are sold as such, so who the heck knows?
All I can say is I ain't buying one.

I’m guessing the range extender never happens.

How will this work? You have to have a service center install it. Do they connect liquid cooling? Then when you’re done they disconnect it? You bring it home? Do they store it at the service center? Or are you basically renting it for a trip? If you can take it home for storage, how will people get it out of the bed? It’s gotta be a good 1,000lbs. If you can get it out, will it be a Power Wall? Does the consumer connect it themselves? Get an electrician to reconnect everytime?

And with a 1,000lbs range extender in the bed, you just dropped the payload by 1,000lbs, so now your payload is worse than a Lightning or Rivian.

Doesn’t make any sense at all…

After more than 4 years, the specs are largely worse than they claimed.

11,000lbs. towing (they said up to 14,000)
2,500 lbs payload (they said 3,500)
Up to 340 miles range (they said OVER 500 lol)

And how does it have way less power than X/S Plaid?

Rivian and Silverado EV destroy it on range, and so will Ford T3

Compare curb weight?

Stainless steel is heavy. It's a semi-armored truck.

Agreed, it's kind of like a Ridgeline, trades aren't going to be buying these over a Silverado or F-150. I think the CT will be a low production vehicle that's more of a novelty than something that can be mass produced and mass marketed. This reminds me of a modern day Hummer H1. Hopefully they are working on a toned down CT2 with a steel or plastic composite body that has a more traditional bed that can be mass produced and sold at a reasonable price.

It does make a statement, I'll give it that.

And saying he "acts like a lunatic" is so hyperbolic as to not require any defense of his past actions.
You're right that he doesn't ACT like a lunatic.

The man-child's antics have shown that he is in fact a lunatic-no acting involved.

I took a real dislike to man-child with the whole "pedo guy" fiasco just because poor wittle musky got his feelings hurt over a truthful statement that his publicity stunt sub wouldn't work. Instead, in typical fashion(that we have seen play out many times) the man-child decided to go on the attack of someone who actually WAS a hero in that operation.

This man-child that so many admire is frankly a disgusting excuse for a human being. I DO think that world would be better off if he faded into obscurity and we never heard from him again.

Fortunately MOST of the public who are not start-struck and blinded by him are starting to see just how unhinged the man-child actually is.

like when he called professional divers rescuing kids trapped in a cave pedofiles?
because they said his submarine idea was not viable
half the time he opens his mouth I cringe
Of course, your statement is taken out of context. Did you ever call somebody a name in your life when you had an argument with them?

I don’t mean this statement as anything against you. I am just assuming you don’t know and only heard the media narrative.
We need to be alert to what we read and see, and do our own investigating.

Anyone who knows me in this forum knows I am not a proponent of Elon Musk or anyone. I do have respect for some things he is achieving as I do a lot of people. I have respect for the truth above all else.

Here is the inconvenient truth:

Sorry, there is no excuse for someone with the public bullhorn Musk has to call someone "pedo guy" on a public forum that the entire world is going to see. It was low class, reckless and downright despicable, I can't think of anything worse to call someone. I never paid much attention to Musk until that incident, but after that he was on my radar and has done little since to regain my respect. I've come to the conclusion that Musk is a disgusting human.

Unless I've missed something the few innovations are:

1. Steer by wire. At both ends.
2. 48V auxiliary power to an unspecified percentage of the car. Clearly it's highly desirable for the electric power steering but what about all the other peripherals like door window motors, computers, lighting including anything towed? Assuming the auxiliary battery is LFE like the 3/Y, is it also 48V, precluding the possibility of a using a conventional jump start pack?
3. Off-road ground clearance at 17" is certainly outstanding off the showroom floor.

But:
The stainless-steel exterior panels appear (from videos) to be bonded or only attached to a steel or aluminum unibody structure. I don't know if I would consider that to be a "stainless-steel exoskeleton". More of a composite unibody at best.

The claimed torsional stiffness seems to be due to the huge die castings at front and rear in combination with the traction battery housing and is commendable. But the latter needs to be very stiff because the internal potted slabs of 4680 (or any other size) cells cannot tolerate torsional strain. This video covers that area.

Did they need to 'develop' a new 300 series SS alloy considering that existing types would probably work just as well? Is that simply for marketing cred?

The ones that choose an F150 as a grocery getter, maybe. Plenty of those pavement cowboys around.

I've read that the Cybertruck has cost Tesla around 2 Billion in development and testing costs. I'd bet they're losing way more than $40k a piece. Isn't that battery alone $25-30 grand?
I think those numbers have to start somewhere and it takes a bit to recoup the costs. I'm not sure how far out they are realizing the costs, but they had to get to the $40k number somehow.

As many times as I have called this thing butt-ugly, I have to say it looks better in person. I was surprised. Huge by huge windshield and that single wiper blade! Here ya go! The little scooter was a nice touch...

Its as much of a truck as any car based suv that folks buy by the hundreds of thousands are…

Doesnt change feminized men from buying them to feel tough, and aging women from buying them to not drive their parents’ station wagon… even though they’re just cars underneath. Now what the demographic will be for this is tbd, since it’s styling is just.. weird…

So meh. It’s a novelty.

They're already buying current trucks, Carolina squatting them, and throwing 26" wheels on them. 🤣

I haven't seen it in person, but I don't think it is butt ugly from what I have seen. I just don't see how it can be mass produced with the stainless steel body, and how practical it can be as a utility vehicle...but in all fairness most people outside of the trades don't use a truck as a truck.
