Stumbled across this by accident. The data sheet claims it is safe for unleaded gas and cat converters. The TBN looks pretty good and the VI is outstanding (the older PDS I found showed it was lower before). No HTHS but I would be surprised if it were anywhere below 3.6 -- never seen a single Xw40 with HTHS < 3.6. Most are 3.6-3.8, with some of the boutique oils being as high as 4.5. Motul's own 300V 5w40 is 4.51.

SJ is curious. What has changed since SJ? I know ZDDP has dropped in SM and SN.

Group V oil, and about $9/qt. Motul Xmax 0w40 is the other 0w40 but it is not a group V. I have run their moto 300V oils in my car with very good results.

I'm guessing this stuff doesn't have FM's. I know there are some old posts here of people using Amsoil Powersports 0W-40. Try it and add some MoS2.

I see no mention of anything about dry/wet clutch and that's what had me thinking it's probably missing something.
 
Agree the HTHS won't be below 3.6cP and SJ doesn't bother me.
If I could get it for $9/L in Canada I'd consider it.
What is the chemistry (diester?) and how does it differ from 300V?

BTW I think the HTHS viscosities of the 300V 5W-40 and 10W-40 are mixed up.
 
I thought that too, Caterham, but I asked Motul and they confirmed the HTHS values are correct. *shrug*

I don't believe it is a diester -- the PDS and website doesn't use that term whereas all the 300V datasheets do. Their words are "100% Synthetic – Ester Based". Some of their datasheets do not even use the word ester, so we know this at least has SOME group V.

Fir you deezul you might find Mobil Delvac 1 ESP interesting.
It's PAO based, has a 186 VI and is also a SM oil:

X-Lite 0w30 is one of the oils I might go with for my next change, actually. Just ran across this by accident and found it interesting -- thought it might be suitable for VW 502/505/505.01 applications.
 
I'm guessing the high calcium in X-lite could act as an FM as well. From Mola's paper:

FM's can be employed in different forms in an additive package for a specific formulation. It can be added by itself without any other function, or may be part of molecule in a detergent (such as a sulfonate) or as part of a Viscosity Improver or antioxidant.

Example of an FM/Detergent additive may be a long-chain calcium,
magnesium, or sodium sulfonate, preferably one long chain of the benzene ring.

So I just spoke to Joey at Motul USA about this oil. He can't openly advocate running it in modern engines due to the API SJ rating since it could interfere with or damage pollution control equipment (cat, O2 sensor, etc), but he said it could be used.

He is going to call the engineers in France to find what the exact HTHS is, though he agreed with my speculation that it is well above 3.5.

I did inquire about the inclusion of friction modifiers. Joey did confirm there are absolutely friction modifiers in the form of additives AND the basestock. The two together compliment each other in this regard.

SnowPower doesn't get a lot of demand in the US because of the climate and they've priced it so low to be competitive with other snowmobile oils. I explained that's why I was so interested -- with 300V running $14/L or more and this stuff at $9/L, it was getting expensive to change in a car that needs almost 10L every 6-9 months.

I'm totally confident in running SJ. Here's my owner's manual:

Well several months later and Joey at Motul has still not been able to coax any HTHS values out of the guys in France. He's going to try one last time but they're not even responding to his inquiries.

At $9.42/qt shipped to my door this stuff is tempting. It's either this, a Red Line 0w30-0w40 blend, or Renewable Lube for the next change. If the local Pep Boys can get Royal Purple 0w40 as part of the $35 change deal, I may take that road.

Thoughts?
