This the first filter I have cut open. It is from a 2009 Lincoln Navigator 5.4 3v with 195k miles. Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 oil, 5000 miles and about 5 months on the filter and oil. I did not see any tears, but the media tore relatively easily when spreading pleats apart to check. Also, the top and bottom metal end caps pulled off pretty easily too. Don't know if that is normal? Fiber end caps underneath. Some carbon crud in the pleats and can. Wondering if these Motorcraft filters are getting too old? I bought a case of 12 from RockAuto about 3 years ago and have 3 left.

Valvoline EP 5w30 and Fram Ultra XG2 went back in.

It's not that uncommon on Purolator filters, I think it just prooves the point that metal end caps don't serve much purpose other than serving as a mold for the glue/resin.

FL-820S filters often look pretty sketchy, like this one does. Had lots of potential for media tearing with that super wide pleat spacing.

This is definitely an older one. Haven’t had that many flutes in awhile. Thanks for cutting. I use these on my Escape and have always wondered what the inside would be like. I would like to use the longer version but where my exhaust is I can’t.

What is the longer version, 500s? That's longer but not as big around.
Well now that I mention that I double checked and it doesn’t look like there is a MC longer one. Someone told me an FL1A would interchange but it says it has standard threads and not metric so never mind on that but if there was a longer version it would be nice.

I don't think there really is a longer version of the FL820, when you look at the evolution of oil filter sizes, the fl1a/Fram PH8 and PH5 were like the standard size when spin-ons first emerged, then a little later the stubbier PH16/FL300 and PH30/PH25 size emerged and by the time metric filters became popular using the stubbier filter was common place so there aren't a whole lot of options for large metric threaded filters.

There are a few longer versions of the Fl820s, but they're application specific and expensive, the Wix WL10058 and equivalent that fits the 2014-2019 Ram Promaster with the Ecodiesel, but being a big application specific filter it's not cheap , then there's the even more expensive WL10346 that's a little shorter but over 4in in diameter meant for some Massey-Furgeson tractors but that's even more steep and hard to source.

It has less media
Whip City Wrencher measure about 153 sqin of media in the fl820, and had the measurements of 2.75inx47.25in on the fl500 which is around 130sqin.
If the FL500S is big enough for a Ford Coyote, it's big enough for anything else. Beside, if the media tears, it doesn't matter how much media area there is, lol.

Not a great showing here, but the fact that it did not tear means, in my opinion, the filter did its job and did not fail.

I think you made the right decision going with the Fram Ultra in this particular application. Even the Toughguard may work well for you here.

The FL-500S can be used. Installed hundreds if not thousands on Escapes like yours at work.

When I had my 2009 f150 5.4 3v spec was fl820, parts guy at ford dealership handed me a fl500s said they inter change, spun it on and was fine other then phaser knock continued. Replaced phasers then couple years later sold it
