If you think all oil filters constructed today should have zero faults, your sadly mistaken with that thought process. When things are mass produced, quality control will never be 100%,sorry guys, thats not reality.

I encourage you to cut a few open. You might be surprised. I am just getting warmed up. The next one up is on some Champion Labs PH820 that were on someones shelf for 2 years. I have dirt on those also. I think Champion Labs elements beat Purolators by a wide margin. Eventually, I will find some good ones.

Next OC will be to QSGB, was tempted, just for S's&G's, to use the QS3600 i've had in my stash for a few years, but likely will be WIX.

if anyone wants to take a REAL chance, @ my local Menards, they have about 6 LOOSE FL-500s's that have been sitting on a clearance shelf absolutely naked,(No Box, No shrink wrap, nothing) for at least 6 months, if not a year. marked for $5 ea.

I've posted this before. I run FL-400s filters in my Fusion, and have cut open quite a few of them. They've all been what I would consider to be pristine, at least for a used filter.

..and for those who doubt, here are two of them, side by side.

I suspect the main cause for problems with the FL820 is the fact that it is a larger diameter filter than the 400s, but the media isn't appropriately beefed up comparatively. It almost looks like they use the same amount of media in the 820 as they do in the 400s. Spread over a larger diameter, it just doesn't pack as tight. Just a guess though.

+1

The aspect ratio of the 400s is different. If the pleat length (end cap to end cap) / pleat depth ((OD of the media - ID of the media) / 2) is greater for the 400s, then stress on the apex of the pleat would be reduced.

This is why I have been saying it also depends on the filter design and probably the application too.

Since you are using an AC Delco on your Chevy, why can't you use a PF1250 on the stang?

Or, even better, use a Wix 51372. It has a silicone ADBV and separate dome end bypass.

The point is, there are plenty of good oil filters you can use on the Mustang.

If they go with those super restrictive looking oil holes like the rest of the purolaters i will never use another Motorcraft again.. I will probably go with the Ultra, the only reason why i don't use the ultra now is that i like the 820-s being a little shorter especially on my Moms MGM it is very tight in there.

So gents, what should I cut & post next?

Old PureOne vs New PureOne PL24651.
Old AC Delco vs New AC Delco PF1250.
Wix 51372
STP S2
Parts Plus PH820
CarQuest R85372
Fram TG2
Fram PH2
Other

Your best bet for the Hastings would probably RockAuto.. I know Amazon carries both Baldwin and Hastings. There are probably lots of other locations, but these are places I know carry them.

There are two problems using RockAuto that I know of.
1. I ordered 5 Champion PH820 on wholesale close out. I think $1 per filter in shipping is not to bad. These turned out to be just over 2 years old. I would have 5 filters around for another 18 months or so. But, what a deal. No warranty.

2. I ordered 3 Wix 51372 and 3 AC Delco PF1250 from RockAuto but presumably new parts, not old stock. The Wix filters were recent vintage. One of the PF1250 was obviously old and had the old cage design. Otherwise, what a deal. Warranty varies.

With Amazon, I ordered what I though would be a Champion Labs PH820 new stock. What they shipped was a total surprise. It wound up being a Parts Plus PH820. A much more expensive filter. Lubricated seal ring, Silicone ADBV and a dome end bypass valve. The center tube is metal. The filter has substantial weight to it. I was wanting to confirm if the Champion PH820 design has the improved cage. I may try this again for a double win.

In a perfect world, I would like to pull an inspection before I buy the filter(s). I think a smaller stash is in order.

Thanks for the tips.

I'll switch to the WIX.

If u have TinyPic like I do, you should be able to use the slot where it says "for I/M and message boards" and cut that then come here and paste them. If you have a hosting site I mean like tinypic

You can upload photos without an account. If you create a free account, you have more options of what to do with photos.

I have not. I'm not sure where to purchase either.

They are harder to get. I saw them on Zoro for good prices, but I have excess right now. I didn't realize you were buying them new.
