I have been browsing the boards for a while and I see quite a bit of noise about Purolator filters failing. I also see that Motorcraft filters are made by Purolater but on a different line. I plan on using conventional Quaker State 5w30 with a 5000 mile change interval. Are the Motorcraft filters better than the Purolators or do they suffer some of the same QC problems? Would I be better off using a Extra Guard or Tough Guard? Fram at least doesn't try to hide their filter ratings or try to feed you meaningless marketing [censored].

Fram makes the ultra and that filter is pretty well constructed, Period!

Motorcraft is very similar to the P1, and some of them have torn. Regardless, the issue has been fixed. Filters made from 2015-on will not tear.
That said, the CQ Red is a very good filter for the price.

I have used the Motorcraft FL400s filters, with a 7,500 mile OCI, on my 2010 Fusion, exclusively, since I bought it. To date, not a single one of these filters that I've cut open have had any visible defect. They were all straight and solid, without any tears, etc..
I would not hesitate to run an FL400s for a 5000 mile OCI.

+1.....easy solution....use the Fram Ultra for two OCI's. IMO, its the best top-tier filter available at a reasonable price.

What Oregoonian and SirTanon have said are good points. I am on the fence on MC oil filters; but if you look at my TG-3614 filter that had 8,400 miles on it, I wasn't too impressed. 5k on a MC should be do able

Maybe so. But the difference in price from MC to Ultra is about $3 each. You can buy a pack of 6 Ultra's on line for under $40. My engine is worth an extra $6/year. And if you decide to go 2X OCI's on one filter, then it's a win-win.

We've seen a few 2015's fail.

I removed a Purolator Classic from my Ridgeline last week that had been leaking since I installed it despite proper installation and checking to make sure it was on tight (a few drops of oil on the garage floor after every trip) I put a FRAM TG in it's place and it cured the leak. Never had any problems in the past with Purolator but between what I have read here and my leaky filter it makes me stop and wonder about recent Purolator filters.

5K oil changes with conventional oil I would go with the Supertech, Carquest Red, or Napa Silver whichever is easiest to obtain.
