Well, I made a run to Walmart tonight to get some supplies for my oil change. 6 qts of Valvoline MaxLife and...well.. I was hoping to find a MC FL-400S that they have ALWAYS had in stock as long as they were stocking Motorcraft parts.

Didn't find a single one! I looked everywhere! In the shelf spot where I normally find the FL-400S, I found a bunch of FL-2005.

Hm, maybe Ford decided to discontinue the FL-400S? I examined the FL-2005.

The box size looks the same. Check.
The filter size appears to be the same. Check.
Open end appears the same with the curved recessed cutouts. Check.
The inside of the filter has something in the middle. [censored].

What's the deal, guys? Did my Walmart just not get any FL-400S in stock?

Some googling for "FL400S FL2005" returns mostly Ford Focus results. I have an F150. The spectrum between these vehicles is just too large for me to feel comfortable putting this filter on my engine.

They are probably just out of the FL-400S, thats a very popular Motorcraft oil filter for them to stop making.

the FL-1A will have the same thread and mating area as the 400-s. It is larger. I use the 400-S on my neon, and wish the fl-1a filter would fit up in there but my power steering cooler is in the way :) I have used many different filters on the cars and no ill effects.

It is an obsolete filter but it's also more than that, IIRC . It's the filter for the older Focus DOHC Zetec engine with a different bypass pressure and ADBV. Again IIRC there was some grumbling amongst those older Zetec owners [the owners weren't older, thier cars were]that Ford initially specd the fl2005 filter for that motor not the 400s. When they dropped the 2005 they said in essence 'just use the 400s.' Your motor may require a different bypass pressure and if that's the case you may want to stick with the 400s.

I think the Zetec was originally a 400 motor but the 2005 was to fix a startup rattle. SOot he 2002 is an upgraded 400. If you can still get a 2005 equivalent in WIX or Napa I would.

how much difference in pressure are we talking here? Mom has a 03 focus and i got a 400s in the shop but can wait to get a 2005 in a wix (NAPA gold?)
The parts guy at the dealership said that this was the filter it always used. Oh well i can always use it on my Kohler courage 25HP.

The original Zetec used a Motorcraft FL200S oil filter until Ford went to the variable cam/timing? engine in 1997/1998. I have a 1996 Zetec Contour that uses the FL200S.

Unless I go to a Ford dealer I can't obtain the Motorcraft FL200S anymore. I've been using Napa Gold and now M1 204 oil filters. I got the Mobil 1 filters at WalMart for the same price as the dealer supplied FL200S and Napa Gold.

Does the Motorcraft FL400 have a Silicon ADBV as the FL200S?

I had heard the 400 from the guys at the shop so good to know someone know for sure.

I do know that the FL300 did replace the FL200. I was using that filter on my Neon (perfect fit) as it was a touch bigger than FL842 for the same money.

You can probably get either at your dealer still.

I really doubt it's that big a deal. My nephew's been running Fram TG/PH 3600's on his Zetec for about 100K with no issues. The FL400S is a fine filter, as are the Mobil 1 M1-209, Puro L25230, WIX 51315 and a bunch of others. And, they'll work on your garden tractor, too, if it has a B&S or Kohler engine!!
