Fram Xtended Guard vs Motorcraft for Mustang

Greetings,

I have been exclusively using FL-820s Motorcraft filters in my 2004 Mach 1 Mustang however my father purchased me a Fram Xtended Guard filter for x-mas. I know it is one of their premium filters but should I use it or stick with Motorcraft? I use Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20 oil and change it every 6 months.
 
nothing wrong with it, but personally.. if fram makes a couple bad products, it kinda sets the tone for me that they take short cuts to entice people to buy the better filters vs. keeping quality consistant. so... I'd go with the motorcraft
 
kind of my thoughts...it may be good or even better filter but I have peace of mind with the Motorcraft...still on the fence.
 
Hey, if I was even given an EG, likely I would use it. In years past my truck survived years of not only Fram, but an undersized one at that. Your Mustang won't pull up lame after one XG even if it has a dome end bypass.
 
I don't think you'll have any issues, but tell your Dad you like Motorcraft oil filters for next time.

+1 As said, the Xtended G is a solid filter. As long as you don't get any start up rattle after it's installed, you should be fine. With a silicone adbv, not likely.
 
I am not sure why he chose a Fram when he knows my brother(gt500) I and use Motorcraft filters. He has a C5 Corvette and exclusively uses Mobil 1(cause the cap says so!)...so I am surprised he bought the Fram...he probably bought the best one because he knows my brother and I have harped on the cheap orange one. Probably going to stick with the Motorcraft...more peace of mind.
 
I haven't had a Filter related problem Yet. I've used everything from Canadian Tire Motormaster, to Quaker State, Fram Normal and Tough Guard, K&N, and the cheap Bosch.

Currently i'm sticking with the Fram Tough Guard, as they seem built OK. I will probably be trying NAPA Gold / Wix next time.
 
The intellectual side of me knows the XG is a very good (albeit overpriced) filter and would be just fine. My emotional side would be verklempt for the entire OCI until I could get a Motorcraft back on there.

+2 ... only FRAM I would use because it is constructed well. Probably the best filter FRAM makes.

If you knew the specified efficiency rating of the FL-820S, you might change your mind. An efficiency of 80% @ 20 microns is nothing to get too excited over IMO. There are many other good filters out there that will do much better than that.

Efficiency wise it probably is. The FL-820S rating of 80% (beta = 5) @ 20 microns isn't that great. The Xtended Guard is rated at 97% @ 20 microns ... most likely due to its full synthetic media.

To give you an idea of efficiency, the PureONE is 99.9% (beta = 1000) @ 20 microns ... which is about as high as you see an automotive oil filter.

No. He wants you to buy a Purolator, preferably a PureOne.


The MC will be assured to meet 100% of the OEM spec's. The Extended Guard, as was said, is about the best filter Fram makes ..and is extremely well built. It' actually not priced bad for what it gives you ..it's just more than most have to spend.
