Motor Oil Recommendations - 2004 MDX 3.5L

I would like oil recommendations for a late model 1st generation Acura MDX, I have a high mileage 2004 Acura MDX 3.5 V- tech engine. Would anyone recommend trying Valvoline restore and protect 5w30 or use a high mileage oil? Looking for recommendations....Thanks.

That Valvoline would be an excellent option. It will clean out any internal grunge inside the engine.

100% would recommend 5W-30 Valvoline Restore and Protect.for the J35 engines. Start with maybe a 3k miles oil change interval, then increase to no more than 5k miles. This is not an extended interval oil, but has shown to work magic in many engines.

@Charmet37 - what is high mileage as a number? Did you buy it new? What have you been doing to get it to that point? Does it have any oil burning issues or other concerns? What has your oil change interval been in the past?

Does the 2004 MDX have VCM (variable cylinder management)? Quick search says didn't start in MDX until 2014.

I think Valvoline Restore and Protect is a very good choice for many people. Valvoline says it's good for whatever your vehicle maintenance minder interval is. BITOG discussions and tests are that it is not an extended drain version 5-7k is a good interval. If concerns when first using, change filter at about 2k miles and cut it open to see if it has a lot of sludge or carbon already.

You don't list location where there may be temperature extremes like the recent Canada -30C that may benefit from a 0W-30 like Mobil 1 ESP.

I purchased the MDX used from the original owner, Maintenance like the timing belt, water pump ect,. has been recently taking care of and the owner had a remanufactured transmission installed. The MDX have over 240,000 miles. The MDX oil weight is 5w20 but with the high miles I wanted to try Valvoline restore and protect 5W30.
