If you put the bypass filter in line with the cooler, you aren't going to get much flow which would negate the usefullness of the cooler. I would suggest paralleling the filter with the oil cooler itself. That way the pressure differential from the input to the output of the oil cooler will force oil slowly through the bypass filter and you will get good cooling and good filteration. This is just one of several ways to do this. If it turned out that there was not enough flow through the bypass filter this way, you could always put a little restriction at the input of the cooler to increase pressure. You will easily be able to tell if it is working right by the temperature of the filter.

I have 2005 chevy 5.3L that can be set up with an oil cooler, the oil flows through the filter to the cooler and on to the motor.
When I add a cooler can I put a Motor Guard ATF filter in line with the oil cooler, I am thinking of using the ATF because it has a bypass, or is the full flow of oil through there to much? The cooler uses 3/8”lines.
If the Motor Guard ATF filter is too restrictive is there a problem drilling and taping another set of ports in the oil cooler adapter to plug the Motor Guard filter in?
If I do modify or machine my own oil cooler adaptor do I need to be concerned with the size of the ports that would feed the Motor Guard filter?

With my limited brain power it seems to me that if I added ports of any size to the oil cooler adaptor for connecting a Motor Guard filter, in this case a lube oil filter, it would regulate itself and I would not need to be concerned about oil pressure.

FYI: I am calling the oil cooler adaptor, the mounting plate that has the oil cooler lines coming out of it; I bolt this to my motor just above the regular oil filter.

Your thoughts on this are much appreciated.

The reason for the element bypass orifice is to keep enough oil going to the cooler. It also works to heat up the filter in cold weather when not using an oil cooler. The ATF filter hooks up in series with the oil cooler just like adding another oil cooler. If that bothers you install a tee and install a regular filter with the restrictor orifice and return the clean oil to the engine in the conventional way.
