The store near me carries two types. One is the regular solar salt and the other is a rust defense salt pellet.

Anyone know what the rust defense pellets use in their ingredients or make-up to call it rust defense?

Really nothing on the Morton site noting the chemical or salt difference between the two types of pellets.

Thanks

We don't have the Morton brand here but we have Culligan brand and the difference between their two pellets as far as I can tell between the rust defense and the normal is one is Calcium/Potassium-Chloride and the other is Sodium-Chloride.

Not sure but Rust Out uses sodium mercaptoacetate as there main ingredient. The rust defense pellets are for high amounts of Iron in the water like "well water".

doitmyself is correct, citric acid is safe for potable water. Never use oxalic acid it can cause kidney stones.

We just had a new water softener installed and the guy said to never use salt pellets that claim to be all natural. He said the yellow bag Morton and Culligan are good ones to use...

And I had a softener guy tell me that "natural" solar salt is better because it results in less residue in the brine tank. It depends on which expert you wish to believe.

Yes this entire area where I live are iron related wells. The school nearby has outside walls stained reddish brown from the lawn sprinklers.

I love my NUVO system that is one of the best citric acid water softeners. So easy to change out the cartridges. Easy to install and tastes great. This softener makes your hard water disappear.
