I thought this significant enough to warrant its own thread...

With big thanks to board member "ScottinWI," who discovered this filter due to some creative sleuthing through the Baldwin website, a monster Peugeot-application filter with a 20mm x 1.5mm thread, anti-drainback, and 14 psi bypass was discovered. Turns out this somewhat oversized puppy has 476 sq in of media! That's anywhere from two to six times that of other commonly used Honda filters. It's the Baldwin B7042, although the Baldwin B202 appears similar except with 20 psi bypass.

The one issue is the gasket, which is about 0.25" larger in both ID and OD than OEM filters. Hopefully some Hondaheads can confirm whether this works for various Hondas' filter landings. The gory details can be found in the bottom half of the thread below. Thanks again to Scott.

The stock WIX/Purolator gasket size for most Hondas is:

Gasket Diameters
O.D. I.D. Thk.
2.475 2.173 0.233

So AC PF1230, Purolator L24458, WIX 51344 will work with no problems as long as you have the clearance for them.

This size gasket will ride on the inner landing of the Honda mounting surface. I imagine that the Baldwin B7042 with gasket dimensions 2.45" ID x 2.81" OD may may work if it sits on the outer landing "ONLY". Hopefully the outer landing has a enough metal behind it and won't flex/crack or something. This is the part that concerns me.

Best way to see this stepped surface on a Honda V6 filter mounting surface, is to remove the right front tire with the filter removed.

Anyone know how the WIX 1344 compares to the WIX 1626 in terms of gasket, bypass pressure, and media area? I use the 1626 on my 2003 Hyundai 2.7L V6, although it leaked on a 2003 Accord I4.

According to wix.com
it has the "larger (wrong) gasket.
Same BP pressure.

I would like to see if this is leak free. What Honda/Acuras do you guys (TC and Scott) drive? 1997 Integra Type R here (w/OEM oil cooler). TC, you have a PM. Thanks.

I should have been less lazy and looked up my post from the winter of 2003.... http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=6;t=000428 I bet that Baldwin filter would leak on my R. Gasket specs are very close.

Actually, I drive a 2004 Sebring with a 3.0L Mitsubishi engine. Lots of room in the oil filter area to accomodate a filter up to 4" dia, almost any length (within reason), the filter hangs straight down, machined filter landing area is 3.12" Dia. I'm leaning towards a Fram PH3985 equiv. filter, 80%+ more volume and not "too" long. Much easier to find as well.

I wouldn't try this with 2002 or newer Honda CR-V. Apparently, based on Honda's poor design (exhaust manifold is right below the oil filter), quite a few have caught fire when the gasket wasn't installed/seated properly.
