Who said anything about "long drains?"

Well... M1 0W40 is a great oil. Stout.
I am a sincere believer in "thinner is better" providing you have the right Builder"s approval and the proper viscosity.
I use Total Quartz Energy 9000 0W30 in ALL my high viscosity (EURO) cars, it has just about every approval there is...

All I have to say is, I've about tried them all, and after oh, lets say.. 4 some years and well over 185,000 miles on 4 different cars, The OCI's don't lie and I've settled with that brand across the board.

Not to say M1 is not a good oil.
My 2 cents worth.

I'll stick to bringing my own oil (0w-40) and see how many miles I can get out of my "baby."

There are a few other small problems to work through, but at least nothing major yet (just a good to-do list). Best car I've had, so far!

I'm technically on the edge of north central Iowa; Boone, to be exact. Continually shocked by how many fellow Iowans or relatives of Iowans that I come across!

Greetings from a fellow Boone dweller!

To add to jaj's post, just remember that even though it lists a 5w-30 as the correct fill, it also has to meet the VW 502 rating (as indicated), meaning that the HT/HS of the oil has to be at least 3.5cp, or in other words a "thick" 30 grade. Another commonly used oil for those apps is "German Castrol". It is the European Formula 0w-30, which in operation acts more like a light 40 grade oil.

I used GC (green) very successfully in my 2004 Audi 2.7T. If a car can "love" an oil, it did
