Mobil1 HM is API SL-rated. I asked the Mobil Tech line whether it would be an appropriate oil to use in a 2005 model where the specification is API SM. Mobil responded th only reason it was not (and will not be) SM rated was because it contains higher levels of zinc as an anti-wear additive.

Is anyone using Mobil1 HM in a car that specs SM? See any problem in doing so?

Thanks.

M1 High Mileage is a very good oil. I saw about a 25% decrease in consumption when I ran it in my Camaro. The higher level of zddp has an upside in improving wear protection for your engine and a minor downside in increasing the probability of fouling your catalytic converter. (That is why the EPA has been twisting the API's arm for years to reduce zddp content in Xw20 and Xw30 oils.) If your car does not have a problem with excessive oil consumption, the HM oil will work fine.

Why are you considering a HM oil?

You should ask on a forum specific to your vehicle type, as there is a slight risk of fouling the emission control system if you do a lot of miles.
I would not use an HM oil unless you need to because of oil leaks, if your engine seals don't leak using an oil with high levels of seal conditioners is not good news, it swells good seals and then you will have to continue using it because changing basic to a normal oil could cause the seals to leak.
If the seals are good but the oil consumption high, then using a slightly thicker oil, for example a 5w40 instead of a 5w30 sometimes helps.
I don't know what OCI Mobil recommend when using their HM oil, but such oils are not designed for extended OCI's, so I would keep to a more normal OCI unless using a real full synthetic.

I have used it and switched back and forth with no problems at all. Never had a leak and still do not. It's a good oil to use and I'd assume you're out or warranty anyway.

I used it in my Z because I wanted to try a synthetic 10W40. Engine ran like a dream on it. Switched back and fourth between that and M1 15W50 (which I like better and will continue to always use).

My son is using M1 10-40HM in his 98Expy 200K and my grandson is using M1 5-30HM in his 02 Camry V6. Both are doing very well.

A leaky seal in a very expensive-to-fix location. I'm giving MaxLife Red Bottle a try but have always used full synthetics. Both Mobil and Valvoline full syn HM oils are SL-rated, at least the 5w30 variety.

I don't think HM oils work very well on RTV sealants, which is what manufacturers use pretty much everywhere (including my problem area), so I'm not overly optimistic.

If you have leaky seals then an HM oil is worth considering, but you can also use a safe oil stop leak as they contain seal swellers and conditioners. Liqui Moly is the only company I trust for additives, they might not always solve a problem but you can be confident that they won't do any harm.

Good results with it, it does warn on the jug not to use more than 3k for the first OCI "because of the cleaning that will take place" when you first use it or something. Based on how nasty it looks coming out, I believe it.
