Hi there,

Some of my friends in China recently bought lot of Mobil1 0w40 from an online store. The oil is on sale for about USD~7.7, and claimed it's imported from US, and it looks identical as ours. But considered 30% overall import tax levied on motor oil, i suspect it's not authentic. And China is indeed flooded with fake Mobil oil.

The interesting thing begins:
They use the oil on their car, Audi A6, BMW5, VW... Mostly euro cars anyway.
Some of them felt the fuel economy increased obviously after 1000 km or so, and felt nice and very happy with the oil. "Seems we got the real Mobil1..."

It's a common sense that the mpg and viscosity/wear protection are on the two end of a seesaw. And Mobil1 0w40 aint designed to get mpg improvement, eh? Based on what they said, I guess the oil was actually decayed and thined after 1000+km. It's not authentic full synthetic oil should be.

Cuz I always run 5w30, never use Mobil1 0w40 before.
Is anyone can share some experience with Mobil 0w40? Thanks

7.7 per what? Liter? Quart? Gallon? 5 quart jug?

I doubt it is authentic. And I doubt that the oil has much to do with a change in fuel economy. Good oil vs. bad generally takes a lot longer than that, to show up as change in fuel consumption.

So many thread about M1.
However, yes it is fake. Why? Because M1 0W40 is NOT fuel conserving oil. HTHS is too high.
God knows what is in it.

It's 1qt bottle
CNY50(~USD7.7) @6.52 exchange rate.

The weired thing is after that short distance 1000km, they can feel obvious mpg improvement. It's more likely oil decay based on my knowledge. Any idea?

To my knowledge, no one can "Feel" obvious MPG improvement. You can only measure it. In the very best of circumstances, the difference in fuel mileage would only be 1% or so, from a change in oil.

Based on onboard computer.

If it's too good to be true, it probably is.

What is the price for authentic M1 0w-40 over there? If they can afford nice cars, why can't they afford authentic oil?

Personally, if I lived in a country where oil was known to be counterfeit, I would steer clear of any shady sources or sources that offer it for an unusually low price for obvious reasons.

It's a much longer story.
The fake oil looks identical as real one. Chinese are really good at it. And the no one will confess they are selling fake oil. More than 90% in the market are fake mobil.

OK, but they only started noticing fuel economy improvements with this latest batch? What oil were they using before? Non-fake M1? Some other oil?

This story has so many holes in it, I don't even know why I'm responding...

More likely fake oil of different recycled source, I guess...

But not rerefining. God only know what in it exactly

What I wonder is why in the world would someone go through the trouble to produce a counterfeit motor oil?

There are many other factors that can lead to increased fuel economy, not just oil. If it were the US, I'd say it's the difference between winter and summer gas. Gas mileage is typically better with summer gas.
