my dad owns a 2004 chrysler concord. changed to mobil 1 and nappa gold filter june 2005 at 6,000 miles. as of now april 2006 at only 8,000 miles , all short trips. dads 85 .
should I change just oil or wait another year???
can acid build up in mobil 1??? lets keep in mind this is not a vet.

So if I understand you there is 2K miles on this oil and the Vehicle total miles is 8000 miles? Problem is all of those short trips add moisture to the oil which does accelerate corrosion. I would change it and after that go for more frequent changes with dino oil. The other thing is that its surprising how many vehicles have coolant leaks which destroys bearings.

You should do an oil analysis if you are doing a yearly change (IMHO)

I am 70. I drive about 5000 miles a year. In my former, unretired life, I averaged 20,000 miles a year and used Mobil 1, changing once a year. Never had a problem in 25 years of M1.

Now, only 5,000 miles a year, I am back to using dino, and changing every 6 months. I have a 1999 Nissan Maxima, bought new in April 1999. That's 7 years, and I've been retired 5 years. You know, in these Nissan V-6's, you can see 6 or 8 inches down into the engine with the oil filler cap off, and all I see is absolutely bare metal, no sludge.

I would always change my oil at least annually with synthetic, and every 6 months with dino. I no longer use synthetic, because I do not drive enough annual miles to justify it.

Yes, change it. 8K on Mobil 1 SS without a UOA is playing Russian roulette (sp??) in my book. Plus, as others have pointed out, without a long drive from time to time, oil could be overwhelmed by environmental factors.

He only has 2,000 miles on the Mobil 1. He only put on 2K in the last year.

That's what I do with my non-turbo cars, figuring that with city driving, dino twice per year is better than synthetic once per year. (The 1.8T get synthetic twice per year.)

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I thought it was 8K, but it's 8K total miles driven. That's not even broke-in in my book. Still, I'd change it. Cheap insurance.

Is this a Chrysler 2.7-liter V-6?

In any event, with all those short trips, I concur with dino SM/GF-4 twice a year is better than synthetic once a year.
