Wife has 2001 Explorer. She does city driving approx 400 or 500 miles per month. She doen't like changing
her oil for 6 month. Would she be better changing oil once a year using Mobil 1 HM or Castrol Edge HM with a
Fram XG2 Filter?

Easily. You are only doing 6k a year. I have done that many miles on regular HM oil and standard filter. Syn HM plus a premium filter that will be no problem.

Yeah maybe but it will be super wavy.
A Fram ultra is like $1 more expensive, and sometimes has a rebate.

The Explorer has 112000 miles on it. I suppose a higher quality high mileage oil would probably be better.

There are almost always rebates out there for synthetic oils. $2/qt rebate still in effect through Dec 31st on Pennzoil Plat/Ultra's. And for Florida's weather, 6K miles is a cake walk. I'd prefer the synthetic if going 1 year. If your vehicle hasn't been using oil there's no need to go to a HM oil regardless if it had 75K miles or 175K miles.

I use the Fram XG2 doing 2 OCI's per year on one filter. You can order these on line (or their equal called professional) at 6 for approx $38.

A Motorcraft filter would be more than adequate for that type of use IMO and would save you a couple of bucks. As stated, 6k for an annual change would be a cake walk for any full syn.

Doesn,t burn oil just considered high mileage for the add package. It also has the 4.0 SOHC engine so
high quality oil for an extended period would be best.

You can find a strong add pack in regular oils, especially synthetics, you don't need HM oils for that. I have a 75K mile 2002 4.6L 4v DOHC engine and don't run HM in it yet since the usage is very small. The add packs in most any SN oil would be adequate for our cars.

The only thing important about the oil filter is that it doesn't fail and honestly oil is oil in any given price point. 6 month approx 3,000 mile oil change intervals in Florida doesn't require sun oil and to think there are benefits is just plain fooling ourselves. Nothing wrong with syn oil if it makes us feel better..

You might consider replacing the screw-in chain tensioners with Ford OEM replacements...you're in the year range I believe where they were still having problems. My '03 Ranger was good up to about 200k, then it started rattling like crazy. Might think about doing them before they get bad.
