Mobil 1 Undeserved Bad Reputation?

Can we please talk about FordBossMe’s VOA/UOA magic? 🤣 🔒
I really think that this was the real person behind the straw man allegations in the original post. "Some say..." Well, it all stems from one guy (and maybe PF's tests putting M1 in the middle of the pack).

I’ve used Mobil 1 exclusively in my sports cars since 1987 and have never come close to wearing out an engine despite extended drain intervals, track use, turbos, supercharged, high revs, etc.

Experience is my guide—plus the amazing availability and great price are insurmountable in my book.

NOTE: Exxon-Mobil’s sheer global scale as a base oil supplier to many tells me they are doing something very right.

Agreed. I think "Some say" is a weasel phrase. OP should attribute or don't bother.

Someone earlier in the thread made the ironic typo of calling it a tribe-ologist and boy does that every fit. Tribalism is exactly what it is.

And even though many of us here on BITOG are even guilty of it, it's foolish to think you can predict oil performance from a VOA. It's dumb when we do it. It's dumb when a youtuber does it.

What's really dumb to me is when we have available oils that have been tested to rigorous specs and passed them and somehow we think that's merely co-equal with some VOA.

"Sure, that oil has 229.5, 502/505 LL-01 certifications, but this here API SP oil surely is better because it has moly! Oh my, this has 150ppm boron, it's gotta be way better!"

What a crazy idea-- testing oil against actual performance parameters like wear, cleanliness oxidation, etc under controlled conditions using the scientific method.

It's like there's a Fantasy Football league of oil performance, where people create imaginary matchups and compete based on VOA. If it wasn't so downright stupid, it would be humorous.

Picture Drew Carey hosting the oil show: "Welcome to "who's oil is it anyway?', the show where the rancor is real, everything is made up, the VOA doesn't matter and but we'll have a lot of funny debating pointless things and until everyone leaves convinced they alone were right all along."
