When I want to determine the ester content of an oil I simply compare the 100C vis to the HTHS vis.
A relatively low HTHS vis for a given grade of oil like 3.0 cP for a 10.5 cSt 30 wt tells me this oil contains little or no ester.
3.8 cP for the same 10.5 cSt 100C vis tells me this oil contains a boat load of ester!

hmm, so are Mobil's criticisms of esters valid ? I found this thread interesting because i assumed all PAO's needed ester to blend the additives, give it seal swell etc. I never new they did without it. What i do find interesting is they don't want to tell anyone their base stock, but now everyone knows about their supersyn, non ester use etc. Also when ever i read about people guessing the make up of MObil 1, ester has been mentioned, but i find it an amazing feat of Mobil's behalf to come up with this technology. Then again as said earlier being the largest PAO producer, its natural to make it out to be better than GRoup 5's.

Problem is different markets probably get different blends.

I often misspell and miss punctuation when typing straight onto “quick reply.” And can understand the frustration after you have responded and it cannot be edited.

This is a short coming of the data base/program used to run the BITOG forum it doesn’t allow a member to go back and edit a response after a short time limit. Removal of the time barrier would help to alleviate the concerns raised.

In respect to time taken to digest information misspelt, what’s your hurry ? If the response is so confusing just politely ask for the response to be resubmitted or clarified.

I cured some of the problem by typing up the response in a “Word” document so that “word” can perform a spell and grammar check.

To be fair, I do think poor spelling and grammar can make an argument very hard to read and understand. I just disagree with some of the people in this thread about when to just buck up and slug through it.

In JohnBrowning's case, I choose to spend a tiny bit more effort reading what he says because he is obviously knowledgeable and makes very valuable contributions. But hey, that's a value judgment and entirely personal.

I agree - it's like the Southern states accent sounding like a hillbilly stupe to a Northerner, regardless or education or significant personal acomplishment. I dont like to focus to much on appearances - I mean, look at how car salesman dress ... and what's goin on in THERE?!
