As Doug said, there is a Porsche approved 5w-50 (Castrol Syntec), and it happens to be available at auto parts stores, so presumably at least some Porsches are using it.
Some very high performance Mustang variants spec a 5w-50 IIRC, as do the Ford GT and McLaren Mercedes SLR (Mobil 1 in those cases).
Mobil 1 0w-40 must be one of the most widely used lubricants ever.
ALL Mercedeses and Porsches (except the diesels and the SLR) use it as factory and service fill. That's a
lot of cars! Ditto some Corvettes, the Dodge Viper, and the Nissan GT-R. Many BMW dealerships and shops use it for service fill since it is approved for almost all BMWs, as do many Saabs for a similar reason.
And if you think those grades are thick, most of BMW's M cars use a 10w-60...
There are plenty of cars out there that spec thick oil.
